Scholarships available
New and returning students who plan to attend Wayne Community College for the spring semester may apply for Foundation of Wayne Community College scholarships Oct. 1 through 29.
Applications are available in the foundation office in the Dogwood Building on campus or can be printed from the foundation's section of the college's Web site at www.waynecc.edu.
Students seeking foundation scholarships are required to apply for federal financial aid also and can do so on line at www.fafsa.ed.gov or obtain materials from the college's financial aid office. Contact the foundation or financial aid office at 735-5151 for more information.
The foundation awarded 143 scholarships worth more than $76,000 for the fall semester. It gave 324 scholarships worth nearly $165,000 during the last academic year.
Fair Share finalist
Four people are now in the running to win a new truck through the United Way's Fair Share Challenge. Barbara Grice, an employee at Goldsboro Builders Supply, is the fourth of the 11 finalists to be picked.
To qualify for the weekly drawings to be eligible to win a brand new truck from Goldsboro Chrysler Dodge Jeep, a donor must contribute his "fair share," which is one hour's pay per month or one percent of his annual salary, to United Way of Wayne County.
The final drawing will be held Nov. 20 when the 11 finalists pick a key in the order that they qualified. The finalist whose key starts the truck will win.
Duplin's Big Sweep
Duplin County will hold an Ugliest Piece of Furniture contest during the three-day Big Sweep cleanup this weekend.
The prizes, $100 for first place and $50 for second place, are sponsored by the Duplin County Keep America Beautiful Committee.
Operation Big Sweep will be held Friday, Saturday and Monday from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. daily. The transfer station on Landfill Road northeast of Rose Hill will accept loads of things like tires, garbage, yard waste, scrap metals, major appliances, construction debris and furniture, especially ugly furniture. But it will not accept things like asbestos, liquids, hazardous waste or contractor or commercial loads.

Jones receives award
U.S. Rep. Walter Jones is a 2004 recipient of the Food Distribution Industry's Thomas Jefferson Award.
The Food Marketing Institute and International Food Service Distributors Association presented the award Sept. 22 at a ceremony on Capitol Hill. At the end of each Congress, the award is presented to senators and representatives who demonstrate commitment to free enterprise through their votes on issues like taxes, free trade, labor policy and other economic matters.
