Disabilities luncheon

The Mayor's Committee for Persons with Disabilities annual awards luncheon will be held Oct. 15 at the Goldsboro County Club.
The featured speaker will be Donna R. Walton, a certified cognitive behavioral therapist, a former teacher, and faculty member at George Washington University. She has also had to overcome her own set of obstacles to realize her dreams.
In 1976, Ms. Walton's life was dramatically changed when she was diagnosed with life-threatening bone cancer. At age 18, the college student had her left leg amputated above the knee to keep the cancer from spreading.
Since then, she has founded the nonprofit organization Dream Reach Win, helping individuals and businesses through her motivational speeches, seminars and workshops. Her motto has been, "What's a leg got to do with it?"
"I basically help them develop a vision so that they can create a dream," she says. "Then I teach them to set a goal and help them learn how to get there."
The cost to attend the noon luncheon is $10. Only checks or cash will be accepted at the door.
