Towel puts out fire
"It was the worst thing she could have done, but it worked."
That's how Assistant Saulston Fire Chief David Walston described the scene Wednesday at 212 Brantwood Drive after a resident had used a towel to put out a stove fire.
Walston said today that the towel could have caught on fire, collected the grease and spread it around the kitchen. He said a fire extinguisher or a lid on the frying pan would have smothered the fire better.
The resident, Myrtle Manning, had left the pan cooking on the stove and then stepped outside to smoke a cigarette. When she returned, the pan was ablaze. The towel, though, put out the fire.
Eight Saulston firefighters answered the 5:05 p.m. alarm with four trucks. About 12 to 15 New Hope volunteers assisted with four trucks.
The home sustained about $5,000 in smoke damage, Walston said. The home was valued at $150,000.
Car burned
A car that was reported stolen this week while the owner was trying to buy drugs was found Wednesday in a Wayne County field. It had been burned completely, sheriff's deputies said.
John Dewitt Clark, 35, of Lake Ridge Drive had told Goldsboro police that three men ordered him from the car at 2 a.m. Monday in the 500 block of East Walnut Street. The men took the car and drove away. He described the robbers only as being black men in their 20s.
The 2002 Chevrolet Camaro was valued at about $15,000.
Thefts
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*Jewelry with a value of $665 was stolen Wednesday after a window was broken at a home in the 700 block of Old Smithfield Road, sheriff's deputies said. The resident, Christopher W. Wolff, also reported the theft of a DVD player, 15 DVDs, 15 compact discs and $50. The value of the other stolen property was estimated at $445.
*A camera, computer equipment and $45 were stolen Thursday after a door was damaged at a home in the 100 block of Cox Place, deputies said. The resident, Meng Qiang Weng, estimated the value of his property at $230 and damage at $150.
*A blue and white 2000 Yamaha dirt bike was stolen between Sunday and Wednesday from a locked barn in the 100 block of Winston Drive, deputies said. The resident and owner, A.M. Sutherland, said the bike was worth $3,679.
*A dark blue 1988 Ford F-150 truck was stolen between Tuesday and Wednesday from Cox's Garage on Old Mount Olive Road, deputies said. The truck, owned by Jesse Lee Sasser of Goldsboro, was valued at $1,500.
Bogus check
A man deposited a $5,268 check Aug. 11 at RBC Centura Bank at 201 E. Ash St. and then took back $2,800 in cash, according to a Goldsboro police report.
Bank officials discovered Wednesday that the check was not good. The suspect was described only as being about 35 years old and white.
Home damaged
A home in the 2000 block of Nahunta Road was damaged Thursday night by several gunshots, the Wayne County Sheriff's Office reported.
The resident, S.D. Martin, reported hearing gunshots at about 6:45 p.m. A window and siding were struck. Damage was set at $150.
Collisions
Damages were estimated at $16,600 in two recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, the Highway Patrol reported.
*Damages were estimated at $8,000 in a two-vehicle collision at about 6:50 p.m. Tuesday on O'Berry Road near Birch Road, the Highway Patrol said. One driver, Danny Onsal Kelly, 38, of Grantham School Road, Mount Olive, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end collision. The pickup that he was driving collided with a trailer pulled by a farm tractor that was operated by Gentry Wayne Pridgen, 25, of O'Berry Road, Mount Olive.
*Damages were put at $8,600 in a two-vehicle crash at 6:32 p.m. Saturday on N.C. 111 near Daw Pate Road, the Highway Patrol said. One driver, Tammy Lynn Sullivan, 35, of CBA Lane, Pikeville, was charged with a safe-movement violation. The report said Ms. Sullivan was making a left turn into a driveway and her car collided with an oncoming, northbound vehicle driven by Ashley Nicole Hill, 20, of Kandis Drive.
Missing
A 16-year-old girl has been reported missing by relatives to the Wayne County Sheriff's Office. Erin Marie Thibodeau of 460 Braswell Road was described as white, 5-feet-4 and 100 pounds with blonde hair and blue.
When she was seen last at 3 a.m. Saturday, she was wearing a pink tank top, shorts and tennis shoes. Anyone with information on her location was asked to call the Sheriff's Office at 731-1481.
