Shed fire
A fire that destroyed a shed and its contents at 400 Green Drive was referred to police for further investigation.
A Seymour Johnson Air Force Base airman, Tanya Orwig, was riding by the home, saw the flames, woke up the residents, helped them outside and called for help, officials said. No one was injured.
"We thought that it was a house fire because of the way we saw the smoke," Assistant Fire Chief Ray Boyette said. "It was fully involved."
One engine company concentrated on keeping the house cool so that the fire could not spread from the shed. Some bricks on that part of the home were singed.
"It could have been a lot worse," Boyette said.
The shed, valued at $18,000, was connected to the outside of the home. The contents also were valued at $18,000.
The home, valued at $100,000, is owned by Benjamin Boyette. Damage to the bricks was set at $100.
Fourteen firefighters responded to the 12:37 a.m. call with three engines, a ladder truck and a command car. They controlled the fire in 15 minutes but remained until 3:32 a.m. to investigate the cause and finish salvage work.
Police Investigator Trey Ball was assigned to the case.
No foul play
No foul play was involved in the death of a Wayne County Jail inmate, according to a preliminary report from the state Medical Examiner's Office.
Roy Lee Allen, 60, of Parkstown died early Thursday, less than two days after he was arrested by Goldsboro police on a charge of taking indecent liberties with a 2-year-old child. He was being held in an isolation cell in lieu of a $50,000 secured bond.
Sheriff's Capt. George Raecher said today that the preliminary autopsy report indicated that Allen did not die from physical trauma or foul play. Lab tests and toxicology reports are pending and will be included in the final autopsy report, Raecher said. The final report is expected in about two months.
Home invasion
Three armed men barged into a home in the 2300 block of U.S. 13 North late Tuesday night, demanded the resident's drugs and stole about $370 worth of property, according to a Wayne County Sheriff's Office report.
Anthony Lanier Phillips told deputies that the men entered at about 11:45 p.m. through an unlocked door. They stole a video-game system, a wallet with $102 and personal papers, keys and a half-ounce of marijuana.
During the home invasion, one suspect fired a handgun, inflicting an estimated $50 in damages to the kitchen floor, the report said.
The robbers were described as black, about 20 years old, between 5-feet-8 and 6-feet and 150 pounds.
Passenger shot
A passenger in a car was shot in the cheek Tuesday as he rode past a group of about 10 men on Maple Street, a Goldsboro police report said.
Emilio Berneol Creswell, 16, of South Best Street was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital, where he was released after emergency-room treatment, the report said.
The driver, Barney Allen Alston, 18, of Goldsboro, told police that he drove past a group of men at about 12:30 p.m. and one fired a weapon into the car.
Three hurt in wrecks
Three people were injured and damages were estimated at $18,550 in four recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*A car was demolished in a hit-and-run wreck at 4:24 a.m. today on Westbrook Road near South Slocumb Street, Goldsboro police said. The car had run off the left side, struck a ditch and overturned. The driver fled. Police said the car, valued at $3,000, was registered to Felipe Milian Fuentes of South Slocumb Street.
*A driver was injured and damages were estimated at $5,000 in a two-car collision at 9:55 a.m. Tuesday on North Herman Street near Pou Street, police said. Roy Lee Vick, 88, of Glen Oak Drive was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. Vick also was charged with a safe-movement violation. Police said Vick was making a left turn into the Herman Park Center parking lot and his car collided with a northbound auto driven by Aletha Ann Leftdwrige, 21, of Hugh Street.
*A driver was injured in a one-vehicle wreck at 10 a.m. Sept. 9 on Wayne Memorial Drive near Saulston Road, the Highway Patrol said. Deidra L. Talley, 43, of Bennett's Bridge Road, Mount Olive, was released after emergency-room treatment. She was charged with exceeding a safe speed after the SUV ran off the right side, crossed back off the left side out of control, struck a ditch and overturned. The SUV, valued at $8,000, was demolished.
*A driver was injured in a one-car wreck at 2:50 a.m. Sept. 4 on Emmaus Church Road near Mitchell Road, the Highway Patrol said. Ronda T. Long, 42, of Stanley Chapel Church Road, Mount Olive, was released after emergency-room treatment. No charges were filed after she said she had swerved to miss a dog in the road and the car ran off the left side, struck two mail boxes and a driveway culvert. Damages were put at $2,550.
Investigations
Wayne County law-enforcement officers are investigating these reports:
*A computer printer, a compact disc and cassette tape combination and 20 DVD movies were stolen after two doors were damaged at a home in the 1700 block of Old Mount Olive Road, sheriff's deputies said. The stolen property was valued at $2,200. Damage at the Robert Keith Greenfield home was set at $225.
*Two rifles and a shotgun were stolen between Sept. 12 and Tuesday from a home in the 100 block of Westbrook Road, Goldsboro police said. The thief had removed an air conditioner to get inside and then put it back after he left, the report said. The resident, Jim R. Jones, said the firearms were worth more than $225.
*A silver 1999 Dodge Stratus was stolen between Monday and Tuesday from the Days Inn parking lot at 2000 Wayne Memorial Drive, police said. The owner, Tammy A. Boyd of Washington, N.C., put a $10,000 value on the car.
Four charges
A 40-year-old man from Dudley was arrested Tuesday by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and charged with four felony offenses.
Terry O'Neil Teachey of Brentwood Drive was charged with breaking and entering, larceny, possession of stolen goods and possession of cocaine. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $22,000 secured bond. The case was investigated by Detective Sgt. Rick Farfour and Deputy William Wells.
Vehicle break-in
The Wayne County Sheriff's Office reports it has cleared a vehicle break-in Tuesday with the arrest of a 34-year-old man from Dudley.
Dixon R. Steward of Barnwell Road was charged with breaking and entering and larceny. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $6,000 secured bond. Detective Sgt. Rick Farfour made the arrest.
