Voter registration
There will be a voter registration drive at the Wal-Mart store in Goldsboro on Saturday between 8 and noon. The drive is sponsored by Boy Scout Troop 299.
Trick or treat
Trick-or-treat hours for Halloween will be on Friday, Oct. 29, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in Goldsboro.
The city is asking that parents supervise the trick-or-treat activities of their children and that trick-or-treating be limited to children under the age of 16.
Residents who wish to participate in trick or treat are asked to leave a porch light, or other outdoor light, on during these hours. Parents are asked to explain to children that homes with no outdoor light aren't participating in trick or treat and that these homes should be passed up during these activities.
Raza in Warsaw
Duplin County's second annual Raza Festival will be held from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Saturday in the recreation park on Memorial Drive in Warsaw.
J.R. Peralta, president of the Association of Mexicans in North Carolina, said 35 agencies manned booths and explained their services to about 600 people at the festival last year in Faison.
The goal this year is to reach out to 1,000 people, said Peralta.
The festival, called Raza meaning "race," celebrates all races and kicks off a month-long celebration in the Latino community. People from Mexico and Central and South America celebrate their independence during the same month.
Book signing
The Wayne County Museum will hold a book reading and signing on Oct. 10 with Susan Walker.
Ms. Walker, the author of "101 Borden Street," has published a new book called "Maura's Trunk."
She and the two other authors, Sue Ellen Frye and Jewel Dean Suddath, will be reading excerpts from their books and then will be able to discuss the books and answer questions from 2 p.m. until 4:30 p.m.
Ms. Frye wrote "Ladies of the Draw-In Room," which tells the story of women working in a mill and what happens to each of them when they go home for a weekend. Ms. Suddath's book is "Murder in Harmony." Harmony is a fictional town in North Carolina.
