Impass ends over teacher pay

The Wayne County Commission-ers voted today to release $760,000 to the school system, in effect, accepting the compromise on teacher supplements.
The decision ended the three-month stalemate with the Board of Education on teacher supplemental pay. The school board approved the deal last week.
Commissioner Jack Best thanked the school system for agreeing to make $900,000 in budget cuts without affecting the classroom.
"It's not been an easy process," Commissioner Efton Sager added. "I appreciate the way the two boards have come together and resolved the situation."
The county board voted unanimously for the compromise.
The school system will now raise the supplement paid teachers and other personnel from 3.5 percent to 6.5 percent, as the commissioners requested in June, but not until Jan. 1.
That means the increase will not affect the first supplement payment, due in November, but only the one to be paid next spring.
