City hopes new rules will prevent demolitions

Two more houses in inner-city Goldsboro were condemned Monday, but the City Council is hoping a new ordinance and federal grants may help restore blighted neighborhoods and prevent further demolitions.
Many of the houses on South Kornegay Street and nearby areas are barely showing the luster of their past years, with sheets of peeled paint revealing a skeleton of bare wood.
Broken steps and dirt yards show years of neglect, and shabby looking "for sale" signs dot the block.
The two buildings scheduled for demolition are at 111 and 115 S. Kornegay St.
"These houses do need to be condemned," said City Councilman Chuck Allen in a briefing before the council meeting. "But we need to stop houses from getting to that point. We need to be proactive quicker."
A new ordinance passed Monday may help the city's effort in saving old houses from deterioration.
