County sets dates for one-stop voting

The Wayne County Board of Elections will open three locations Thursday, Oct. 14, for one-stop voting for the general elections.
The three polling places will be:
*Wayne County Public Library, 1001 E. Ash St.
*Belfast Fire Station, 3212 U.S. 117 North.
*Dudley Fire Station, 4533 U.S. 117 Alternative South.
The library will be open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., while the two fire stations will be open Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
All three locations will also be open Saturday, Oct. 30, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. That will be the last day of one-stop voting.
Voters may apply now for a traditional absentee ballot. Requests can be made in person or by mail. The deadline for submitting an absentee ballot is 5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 26.
Civilians can send a handwritten letter to Wayne County Board of Elections, Attention: Absentee Request, 209 S. William St., Goldsboro, N.C. 27530. Include your name, date of birth, physical and mailing addresses, and the election ballot desired.
Air Force personnel who are deployed and their spouses can register by mail and vote by military absentee ballot. This also applies to members of the Peace Corps. For more information, go to the Federal Voting Assistance Web site, www.fvap.gov.
State law requires some voters to submit a copy of identification along with the returned absentee ballot. These may include a current and valid photo identification or a utility bill, government check, bank statement or paycheck showing name and address.
Disabled or illiterate voters can be assisted in submitting an absentee ballot but only by a close relative or legal guardian.
The deadline for registering to vote is 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 8. To be eligible, you must be at least 18 years old and have been a county resident at least 30 days by Nov. 2.
You can register at the elections office, 209 S. William St., any weekday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Forms are also available at the N.C. Department of Motor Vehicles offices and at county libraries.
Voters who are currently registered do not need to re-register, but if they have moved since the last election, they should notify the Board of Elections of the change by the deadline.
The general elections will be Tuesday, Nov. 2, from 6:30 a.m. until 7:30 p.m.
The ballot will include candidates for president and vice president; the U.S. Senate seat now held by John Edwards; U.S. House, Districts 1 and 3; and governor and other state offices. Wayne County voters will elect seven county commissioners, three school board members and a register of deeds.
