WOOFF beefs up fund-raising

A Goldsboro animal advocacy group is beefing up its fund-raising activities this month.
Welfare of Our Furry Friends invites the public to dine out on Sept. 14 at the Western Sizzlin in Goldsboro to help raise money to build a new animal shelter.
The organization formed five years ago for that purpose, and progress has been slow, says the treasurer, Melody Drew. She has been active in the organization since she joined three years ago.
She says the group is still hoping someone will donate the land for a tax write-off, because that is going to be the biggest expense.
"It's something we need in Wayne County," she said. "We're one of the few counties in North Carolina that doesn't have a no-kill animal shelter. We call them long-term shelters."
The group can begin applying for grants to help pay for building the shelter after the land is acquired.
"But we have to have the land first," she said. "We have about a dozen active members. We really need more help. ... It's tough here. In a lot of areas, people are more into their dogs. ... There's a person for every little animal out there."
The next event will be the organization's annual yard sale on Sept. 25 at the home of the president, Ione Kuhns, on Westwood Drive.
The annual WOOFF gift wrapping booth will be set up at Berkeley Mall the day after Thanksgiving and will be open each weekend before Christmas.
