Helping Florida
The Marion Edwards Recovery Center Initiatives, based in the Rosewood community, is collecting items to send to Florida victims of Hurricane Frances.
Needed are water, canned foods, children's and adults' diapers, electric fans, gloves, garbage bags, flashlights, C and D batteries, two-way radios, tarps, generators, blankets, first aid items and port-a-potties.
People who have items they would like to donate can take them to the warehouse at 676 Community Drive between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday.

Eureka to get grant
The Eureka Volunteer Fire Department has received a $6,820 state grant for equipment.
The check was from the N.C. Department of Insurance's fund, which was created by the state Legislature. The department must match the grant. The total amount of grants approved for Wayne County to date is $1,123,374.
Economic growth
Dan Gerlach, senior policy adviser for fiscal affairs for the state of North Carolina, will speak at Mount Olive College this month.
He will address North Carolina's economic outgrowth in the Lois K. Murphy Regional Center on campus at 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 22..
The event is part of the Business Breakfast Briefing series sponsored by the Mount Olive College School of Business. It is designed for the business, technology and academic communities.
Gerlach was named by Gov. Mike Easley as senior policy adviser for fiscal affairs in 2001 and advises the governor on budget and fiscal matters. He has served on several economic commissions for the state under Easley and is an adjunct instructor at N.C. State University and UNC-Chapel Hill.
Gerlach holds a masters of public administration degree in state and local finance from Syracuse University and bachelor's degrees in economics and English from the University of Notre Dame.
To pre-register for the event, contact Krystal Faison at 658-2502, extension 3007, by Sept. 15. Cost for the seminar is $15 and includes a breakfast buffet and networking session from 7:30 a.m. until 8 a.m. The program will begin promptly at 8 a.m. and will finish by 9 a.m.
