Store robbed
A man and a woman robbed a check-cashing store Wednesday of an undisclosed amount of money, a Goldsboro police report said.
A clerk at the Commercial Check Cashing store at 206 S. Berkeley Blvd. told police that the two robbers walked in at about 8:30 a.m., displayed a handgun, demanded money, grabbed it and fled as the business alarm was sounded.
No description of the suspects was available.
Drug round-up
Two more men have been arrested by authorities as a result of a nine-month undercover drug operation and charged with felony offenses.
*John Spearman, 20, of South George Street was charged with possession of cocaine and possession of marijuana. He also was charged with driving while his license was revoked, and he was picked up on an outstanding arrest order. His total secured bond was set at $11,000.
*Tronte Lamont Kornegay, 35, of Dell Drive, Dudley, was charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana and sale and delivery of marijuana. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $4,000 secured bond.
These two arrests bring the total to 17 people charged. A total of 27 people are being sought on about 70 charges in the operation.
The multi-jurisdictional operation was conducted by the Goldsboro-Wayne County Drug Squad; Wayne, Sampson and Wilson County sheriff's offices, and Goldsboro, Selma, Sharpsburg and Wilson police.
Tobacco barn fire
A burner malfunction was blamed Monday night for a fire that destroyed a tobacco barn at 695 Lancaster Road, fire officials said Tuesday.
"Fire was coming from the rear of the barn," Patetown Fire Chief John Gardner said. "It took us about 30 minutes to put it out, because we had to take the tobacco out of the barn."
The barn, valued at $2,000, was owned by Mike Lancaster of Pikeville. The tobacco, which was not saved, was valued at $4,000.
About 17 Patetown and 20 Pikeville volunteers responded to the 9:45 p.m. alarm with a total of eight trucks.
"We got there quickly," Gardner said, "because both departments had meetings at their stations."
Two people injured
Two people were injured and damages were estimated at $38,675 in eight recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*Damages were estimated at $5,000 in a car-truck collision at 6 a.m. Wednesday on Dr. M.L. King Jr. Expressway, the U.S. 70 bypass, near Florida Street, Goldsboro police said. Jennifer Dawn Hayes, 19, of Hinnant Road, Pikeville, was charged with hit and run. Police said Ms. Hayes had pulled from Florida Street and the pickup that she was driving collided with a car. She reported the collision two hours later. The other motorist was identified as William Anthony Hobbs, 33, of Antioch Road, Pikeville.
*Both vehicles were demolished in a crash at 6:15 a.m. Wednesday at Old Grantham Road and Haywood Drive, the Highway Patrol said. Mario Padilla Rodriguez, 31, of Hannah Way, was charged with a yield violation. Troopers said Rodriguez's car collided with a sport utility vehicle driven by James Mathes Barnett, 39, of Arrington Bridge Road, Seven Springs. The vehicles were valued at $6,500.
*A car struck standing water on U.S. 117 near O'Berry Road at 6:39 a.m. Wednesday and slid into the cable guardrail in the median, the Highway Patrol said. Dorothy S. Smith, 32, of Kenly, was charged with exceeding a safe speed. Damages were set at $6,900.
*A pickup truck hit standing water on Stevens Mill Road near Falling Creek Church Road at 9:45 a.m. Wednesday, then skidded off the left side, struck a ditch and overturned, the Highway Patrol said. Porter Allen Jones, 19, of North Jordans Chapel Road, Four Oaks, was charged with exceeding a safe speed. The pickup, valued at $7,000, was demolished.
*A pedestrian was struck by a car at 9:15 p.m. Tuesday in the Case Farms parking lot off Pecan Road, the Highway Patrol said. Shirley S. Porter, 60, of Adams Street was listed today in stable condition at Wayne Memorial Hospital. Miguel Angel Jaco, 23, of Nutgrass Street, Mount Olive, was charged with a safe-movement violation.
*A driver backing from a driveway collided with a Wayne County school bus at 7:45 a.m. Monday on Falcon Drive near Lancaster Road, the Highway Patrol said. The driver of the car, Angela Gayle Fox, 35, of Falcon Drive, Pikeville, was charged with a safe-movement violation. Neither the bus driver, Charles Henry Weeks, 68, of Hinnant Road, Pikeville, nor any of his 36 student passengers was injured. Damages were set at $1,600.
*A driver was injured in a one-truck wreck at 4:15 p.m. Saturday on Mount Carmel Church Road near U.S. 117, the Highway Patrol said. Victor Arnold Jones, 55, of Mount Carmel Church Road, Pikeville, was released after emergency-room treatment. He said he had swerved to the left to avoid a head-on collision and his pickup ran off the left side and struck a mail box and ditch. No charges were filed. Damages were put at $3,025.
*Damage was estimated at $8,600 in a one-car wreck at 4:45 p.m. Aug. 26 on U.S. 117 near O'Berry Road, the Highway Patrol said. The car hydroplaned on water in the road, went out of control into the median and struck the cable guardrail, troopers said. Laura W. Prather, 68, of Longleaf Avenue, was charged with exceeding a safe speed.
Investigations
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*Three people said Wednesday that their property had been stolen from their rental storage units at 1340 Claridge Nursery Road. Dean Allen Anderson of Goldsboro reported the larceny of two saws and a trick bike that were valued at $1,100. Tracie Lynne Wilson of Pikeville reported the theft of a television, a computer, a printer and a day bed that were valued at $730. Eva Marie Scott of Pikeville said two televisions, a microwave and a video cassette recorder, worth $940, had been stolen.
*Two bicycles were stolen Wednesday from the 200 block of Scott Street. The resident and owner, Charles M. Stratton, said the bikes were worth $1,400.
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*Forty-five compact discs, a DVD player, 20 DVDs and other property were stolen after a window was smashed at an apartment in the 2700 block of Billy Francis Drive. The resident, Kenis Jones, estimated the property's value at $1,180.
*A monitor, a compact disc player-recorder and a wireless microphone were stolen from a travel trailer in the 100 block of East Ash Street. The owner, Riley Ferguson, put a $1,550 value on the property.
*A black 1997 Dodge Ram pickup truck was stolen from Wayne Memorial Drive and New Hope Road. The truck, owned by Elton Pate of Goldsboro, was valued at $9,000.
*An unlocked blue 1986 Chevrolet Blazer was stolen from the 1700 block of Salem Church Road. The owner and resident, Sally Johnson, said the truck was worth $1,500. A portable CD player, valued at $20, also was stolen from another unlocked car.
Missing
A 15-year-old girl was reported missing Wednesday to the Wayne County Sheriff's Office. Britney Latrice Baker of 3953 Central Heights Road was described as black, 5-feet-3 and 130 pounds with dark eyes and dark brown hair.
She was seen last at 11 p.m. Tuesday. No clothing description was available. Anyone with information on her location was asked to call the Sheriff's Office at 731-1481.
