Poetry week at library
The Wayne County Library on Ash Street will have a week of poetry events Sept. 20 through 23, featuring performances from local poet Shirlette Ammons.
The week will begin with a poetry reading and a musical performance by Ms. Ammons and her band Mosadi.
Two writing workshops, one for young adults and one for older adults, will be held on Sept. 21 and 22. The week's events will conclude with an open-microphone poetry reading.

State Fair tickets
Berkeley Mall in Goldsboro will offer advance tickets for the 2004 N.C. State Fair beginning Sept. 30 through Oct. 14.
Tickets will be on sale during regular mall hours except on Oct. 14, when sales end at 6 p.m. Lines will be closed promptly at 6 p.m. Only those in line before the line is closed will be served.
Adult tickets are $5 in advance versus $6 at the gate. Tickets for children 6-12 are $1 in advance and $2 at the gate. Kids 5 and under and seniors 65 and older are admitted free.
Groups of 40 or more can save $1.25 by purchasing advance tickets at the discounted price of $4.75.
Ride books are $9 in advance compared to $18 at the fair. The tickets are sold in booklets of 24 and most rides require three to five tickets. Ride books will only be good for the 2004 fair. Books from previous fairs, including 2003, will not be accepted.
Cliffs programs
Cliffs of the Neuse State Park will present two nature programs in early September.
On Saturday at 2 p.m., interactive games will be played that teach what it takes for animals to survive in the wild. Participants should meet in the left corner of the lake parking lot.
On Sunday at 2 p.m., a park ranger will lead a hike and show the identifying characteristics of about 20 different species of trees. Participants should meet at the museum and wear good walking shoes. They may want to bring insect repellent and water.
More information about these programs may be obtained and reservations may be made by calling 778-6234 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Fall festival
The Goldsboro Recreation and Parks Department is looking for bands, soloists, dancers and instrumentalists to perform at its fall festival on Saturday, Oct. 23.
The festival will be held from noon until 4 p.m. at Herman Park Center. Music categories are country, gospel, jazz, blues, beach and pop.
