Ballpark break-ins
Wayne County Sheriff's detectives believe they have solved a series of six break-ins at the Eastern Carolina Athletic Park on Buck Swamp and four other break-ins with the arrest of a Princeton teen-ager.
Joshua Daniel Green, who did not disclose a home address, was charged today with 10 felony counts of breaking and entering and larceny. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $250,000 secured bond.
Green, 18, was accused of breaking into the ballpark, inflicting an estimated $3,000 in damages and stealing cash and property, including a Juggs radar gun that measures the speed of a pitch.
The ballpark owner, Ronnie Sasser, and another employee heard someone trying to break into the park at about 9:45 p.m. Monday. They notified authorities. Sheriff's patrol deputies and detectives and Highway Patrol troopers arrived, searched the area and found Green, they said.
Detectives and park employees had been staking out the business for more than a week.
Detective Sgts. Rick Farfour and Tony Morris were assigned to investigate the case. They were assisted by Maj. Billy Anderson and B-shift patrol Sgt. Steve Mozingo and his deputies.
"An investigation of these crimes is continuing," Capt. George Raecher said today, "and other arrests are possible."
Crime of the Week
A series of residential break-ins have been chosen by Goldsboro-Wayne County Crime Stoppers as its latest "Crime of the Week."
Goldsboro police are investigating break-ins near Marigold and Paul streets, the 900 block of Evergreen Avenue, and the 400 to 600 blocks of Park Avenue and Beech Street. Many have happened during daylight.
Anyone with information on these break-ins or any other crime in Wayne County was asked to call Crime Stoppers at 735-2255. Callers may remain anonymous, and they may be eligible for cash rewards of up to $1,000, if their information leads to arrests in felony cases.
Woman escapes fire
A passerby notified a homeowner Monday that the upstairs of her house at 1014 N. George St. was on fire, a Goldsboro fire official said today.
The homeowner, Sara L. Kornegay, who lives in Kenly, saw the fire and escaped unharmed. The wood-frame home, divided into three apartments, is occupied by her son, Yul Wells, and others.
When 14 Goldsboro firefighters answered the 9:32 a.m. alarm, Assistant Fire Chief Jerry Langston said they saw heavy smoke. The fire was controlled in about 20 minutes. They remained for more than an hour to put out the fire, investigate the cause and complete salvage work.
An electrical failure in the attic was blamed, the assistant chief said.
Damage was confined to the second floor and attic, Langston said. He estimated damage at $10,000 to the home and $1,000 to the contents. The home was valued at $60,000, and contents were valued at $10,000.
Coincidentally, the people living in the upstairs apartment were moving to one of the two downstairs apartments, Langston said.
Truck theft
A 27-year-old man was arrested Monday by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and charged with stealing a farm truck a day earlier.
Jose Luis Reseno-Oliva of U.S. 70 West was charged with felony larceny of a vehicle and felony possession of stolen goods. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $5,000 secured bond.
Reseno-Oliva was stopped by Goldsboro police in the Cherry Hospital parking lot and charged with driving while impaired. The 1991 truck, valued at $5,000, had been reported stolen Sunday night by the owner, Borden Franklin Howell Jr. of Goldsboro.
Jewelry stolen
About $6,935 worth of jewelry, collectible coins and other property was stolen from a home in the 100 block of Spring Bank Road, according to the Wayne County Sheriff's Office.
The resident, G.H. Jones, reported the theft of two boxes filled with jewelry, four watches, a $5 gold piece necklace, 10 rolls of state quarters, 20 silver dollars, two camera and a scanner. The thief had inflicted about $100 in damages to a door to get inside, deputies said.
Deputies also are investigating these reports:
*Two microwave ovens were stolen after a door was pried open at Brogden Primary School near Dudley. The ovens were valued at $250. The thief also damaged two vending machines in an attempt to steal coins. Damage was put at $150.
*A bed, a vacuum cleaner and two shower doors were stolen Monday from a home in the 100 block of Dobbs Place. The resident, David Amsellem, reported that his property was replaced with similar, but less expensive, items. His property was valued at more than $600. At the same time, a bedroom door, a couch and a jacket also were damaged.
Investigations
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*A television, a video cassette recorder, a trash can and an undetermined amount of cash, snack foods and drinks were stolen from Accent Health at 301 N. Herman St. The TV and VCR were valued at $365. The thief had broken two windows to get inside and then damaged two vending machines, owned by Lane Vending of Pikeville, to steal the snacks and drinks. Damage was set at $3,500 to the machines and $200 to the windows.
*A laptop computer and a luggage set were stolen Monday from a home in the 500 block of Park Avenue. The resident, Balaj Ramadoss, put a $1,660 value on his property.
*A DVD player, a DVD movie, food, a photo and other items were stolen after a window was damaged at an apartment in the 2600 block of Cashwell Drive. The resident, S.L. Cain, estimated the value of the stolen property at more than $130.
*A four-door, green 1996 Ford Explorer was stolen from an apartment parking lot in the 700 block of North Spence Avenue. The owner and resident, Gregory Thomas Barnes, said the SUV was worth $24,000.
Collisions
Damages were estimated at $33,000 Monday in two traffic collisions in Goldsboro, police reported.
*A trucker swerved to miss debris on Dr. M.L. King Jr. Expressway, the U.S. 70 bypass, at 10:54 a.m. Monday and the tractor-trailer slid off the left side and jackknifed. The driver, Steven Randall Eubanks, 54, of Beaufort, was neither charged nor injured. But damage to the Eagle Transport rig from Rocky Mount was set at $17,000.
*Two cars were demolished in a collision at 7:45 a.m. Monday on North Claiborne Street near Edgerton Street. Monique Nakisha Speaks, 26, of South John Street, was charged with driving left of center. Police said her northbound car collided with a southbound auto driven by David John Taylor, 39, of East Ash Street. The cars were valued at $16,000
Drug charge
A 22-year-old man from Goldsboro was arrested Monday by Goldsboro police and charged with a felony drug offense.
Spencer Alexander Ward of South Taylor Street was charged with possession of cocaine. He also was charged with carrying a concealed weapon and resisting arrest. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $10,000 secured bond.
Parole scheduled
A 40-year-old Goldsboro man, serving a life sentence for second-degree murder, will be eligible for parole on Aug. 18, 2007.
Randy L. Pace, who lived on West Walnut Street, pleaded guilty Jan. 10, 1986, in Wayne County Superior Court. He had been charged with first-degree murder and other charges on March 17, 1985.
Pace has been approved for parole by means of the mutual agreement parole scholastic and vocational program, a three-way agreement with the N.C. Parole Commission, the Division of Prisons and the offender.
The state's current sentencing law eliminates parole for those convicted after Oct. 1, 1994. But the commission is responsible for paroling defendants sentenced under previous guidelines.
