Kitchen fire
Unattended cooking was blamed Sunday night for a fire that caused about $2,400 in damages to a home at 209 S. Virginia St., a Goldsboro fire official said.
The fire damaged the stove, cabinets and the floor, Assistant Fire Chief Ray Boyette said. Smoke damaged the entire home. Damage to the home was set at $2,000, and damage to contents was put at $400.
The home, owned by Dees and Tyndall Realty, was occupied by Synovia Washington. It was valued at $60,000, and contents were valued at $4,000, Boyette said.
Fourteen firefighters answered the 10:32 p.m. alarm with three engines, a ladder truck and a command car. They needed only 35 minutes to put out the fire, investigate the fire and finish salvage work.
Tobacco barn burns
A tobacco barn at 453 Weaver Road was destroyed this morning in a fire caused by a mechanical malfunction.
"It was pretty much a done deal when we got there," Grantham Fire Chief Ted Grantham said.
A flooded burner was believed to have started the fire, Grantham said. The barn and the tobacco, owned by Jerry Weaver, was valued at about $15,000. Eighteen Grantham firefighters kept the fire from spreading to several other barns.
Grantham brought five trucks, and Thoroughfare volunteers assisted. They remained for about two hours to put out the fire, investigate the blaze and finish salvage work.
Arson suspected
Damage has been estimated at $15,000 in a suspicious house fire at 5178 Indian Springs Road, a Wayne County sheriff's report said.
Authorities believe the fire on Friday was set by someone who had broken into the home a day or two earlier. The home was owned by the late Mr. and Mrs. Frank Phillips.
Thirty-three vehicles stolen
Thirty-three disabled vehicles have been stolen from Carolina Auto Recyclers at 1696 Lancaster Road, according to Wayne County Sheriff's Office reports.
After the theft, the vehicles, between 20 and 50 years old, were sold to a junk vehicle dealer in Dudley. They had a combined value of $3,278. The theft occurred between Aug. 2 and Friday.
Drug charge
A 31-year-old man has been arrested by the Goldsboro-Wayne County Drug Squad and charged with a two felony drug offenses after a search of his home.
James Antonio Riddick of East Maple Street was charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana and maintaining a home for the purpose of keeping and selling marijuana and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia. Goldsboro-Wayne County Crime Stoppers assisted in the case.
Two hurt in wrecks
Two drivers were injured and damages were estimated at $16,000 in three recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*A driver from Goldsboro was injured in a two-vehicle collision at 1:10 p.m. Sunday at North William Street and Royall Avenue, Goldsboro police said. Jeffrey Devon Gorham, 21, of Fourth Street was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. Gorham and the other motorist, Jo Anne Jackson, 40, of North Audubon Avenue, were charged with a safe-movement violation. Both said they had the green light. Damages were set at $4,000.
*A driver was injured in a one-truck wreck at 7:37 a.m. Thursday on Stevens Mill Road near Stevens Church Road, the Highway Patrol said. Adam Paul Cox, 16, of Dobbersville Road was released after emergency-room treatment. Cox was charged with exceeding a safe speed after the pickup truck ran off the right side, then careened off the left side out of control and struck a driveway culvert and a mailbox. Damage was set at $4,000.
*A pickup truck was demolished in a wreck at 12:15 a.m. Thursday on Stevens Mill Road near N.C. 581, the Highway Patrol said. The truck ran off the right side, came back on the road, ran off the left side, struck a ditch and overturned. The driver fled. Troopers said the truck, valued at $8,000, was registered to Randy Merle Keen of C.B. Keen Road, Mount Olive.
Investigations
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*Video-game equipment, a DVD player, a video cassette recorder and a DVD-VCR player were stolen Friday from a home in the 200 block of Kornegay Drive near Dudley. The resident, P.R. Jones, put a $1,698 value on the stolen property.
*Thieves on Thursday stole three microphones and five cords, a video-game system and 30 games, a watch, two wedding rings, two video cassette recorders and a DVD player from a home in the 200 block of Eagle Ridge Drive, a supplemental report said. The resident, William L. Quidley, reported on Friday the theft of a shotgun. The stolen property was valued at $2,837. Damage to a door and a dresser was set at $675.
*A 32-inch television was stolen between Aug. 30 and Friday after a lock was cut from a rental storage unit at 1340 Claridge Nursery Road, deputies said. The renter, Edward Franklin Sugg of Goldsboro, put a $200 value on the TV.
*A total of $10 was stolen between Friday and Saturday after a car seat and carpet were damaged in the 100 block of Old Jason Road, deputies said. The owner and resident, B.J. Mozingo, estimated damage at $280.
Thefts
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*A DVD player, DVDs, collectible coins, a video cassette recorder and a 1991 ring were stolen Saturday from an apartment in the 600 block of Park Avenue, police said. The resident, Johnny Allen Joyner, said his property was worth $815. The thief entered the home after removing a window.
*A crystal vase and a canister set were stolen between Wednesday and Saturday after a lock was broken on a rental storage unit at 2403 N. William St., police said. The renter, Diane Tyndall of Pikeville, put a $75 value on her property. Damage was set at $10.
