Property stolen
again from ballpark
A speaker and an amplifier were stolen between Wednesday and Thursday from Eastern Carolina Athletic Park at 871 Buck Swamp Road, according to a Wayne County Sheriff's Office report.
The break-in was the sixth at the park since July 17.
The thief had pried open a door, damaging a building at the same time, to get inside, deputies said. The stolen property was valued at $1,000. Damage was set at $700. A total of $33.51 also was stolen but was recovered.
Other evidence was collected from the scene, detectives said.
Other break-ins occurred July 17, 16 and 27 and Aug. 18 and 22.
Anyone with information on these break-ins and thefts was asked to call the Sheriff's Office at 731-1481 or Goldsboro-Wayne County Crime Stoppers at 735-2255. Callers may remain anonymous, and they may be eligible for a cash reward, if their information leads to an arrest.
Pet store break-in
Goldsboro police solved a downtown business break-in Thursday with the arrest of a 44-year-old Goldsboro man.
Joseph Alton Harper of East Walnut Street was accused of breaking into the LaPaws Pet Grooming Parlor at 145 N. Center St. between last Friday and Saturday and stealing a stereo system, Investigator Seth Harris said. The system was valued at $150, a police report said. A cash register also was damaged during the break-in.
Harper was charged with three felony offenses -- breaking and entering, larceny and possession of stolen goods. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $15,000 secured bond. Officer C.H. Newsome and his search dog assisted in the arrest.
Driver injured trying to avoid rabbit
A driver was injured in a one-truck wreck at 4:20 a.m. Tuesday when he said he swerved to miss a rabbit on U.S. 70 near Lake Wackena Road, the Highway Patrol said.
Matthew Daniel Harr, 21, of Crystal Drive, LaGrange, was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. The report said the pickup ran off the right side, came back on the road out of control, then ran off the right side again and struck a driveway culvert. No charges were filed. Damage was put at $2,400 to the truck.
*Damages were estimated at $11,500 in a two-truck collision at 4:48 p.m. Thursday at Patetown and New Hope roads, Goldsboro police said. Anthony Ray Kennedy, 42, of Antioch Road, Pikeville, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end collision. The other motorist was identified as William Warren Bishop, 72, of Aspen Circle.
Investigations
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*Two camcorders, a DVD player, two remote controls, a pocket watch, an Auburn University hat, a gym bag and socks were stolen Thursday from an apartment in the 700 block of Sandhill Drive, sheriff's deputies said. The thief had broken a window to get inside. The resident, John Lawrence Stone, put a $580 value on his missing property. No damage estimate was listed.
*A shotgun and other property was stolen Thursday after a door was damaged at a home in the 100 block of Eagle Ridge Drive, deputies said. The resident, William Lewis Quidley, said the shotgun was worth $200. Damage was set at $200.
Jewelry theft
Goldsboro police are investigating these matters:
*A diamond ring, a pearl necklace and two watches were stolen between Aug. 20 and Thursday from a home in the 200 block of South Spence Avenue, police said. The resident, T.R. Hoover, put a $16,200 value on the jewelry.
*Fifty-seven cartons of cigarettes and two boxes of Slim Jims were stolen before dawn today from the Southco Outlet at 3701 Commercial Drive, police said. The thief had thrown a rock through a door glass to get inside. The stolen property was valued at $1,274. No damage estimate was reported.
*A Philips DVD-VCR combination with a surround sound system and a 43-inch television were stolen Thursday after a lock was damaged at a room in the 100 block of North Virginia Street, police said. The resident, Charles Odena Newsome, put a $1,976 value on his property.
*A gold, four-door 1995 Ford Contour was stolen between Wednesday night and Thursday from the 1700 block of Maple Street, police said. The resident and owner, Kimberly Wells, said the key was left inside but the car was locked. The car was valued at $1,000.
Two men sought
Two men are sought by Goldsboro police for two felony counts each of possession of stolen goods and obtaining property by false pretense.
Mark Ray McNair, 43, was described as black, 6-feet and 170 pounds with black hair and brown eyes. Kenneth Jasper Lunnie, 45, was described as black, 5-feet-9 and 170 pounds with black hair and brown eyes. Both are known to be in the James Street area.
