Waynesborough Village focus of Make a Difference Day

Waynesborough Historical Village will receive some renovations during this year's Wayne County Make A Difference Day sponsored by the United Way.
"We are absolutely thrilled and delighted that we were chosen," said Colleen Baker, secretary of the Old Waynesborough Commission. The commission runs the village, which has been chosen as the kick-off location for the event on Saturday, Oct. 23.
Ms. Baker spent her time looking around the village and determining what needed to be done and developed a 20-page wish list of possible projects and presented it during a United Way meeting.
The list contains projects for the village grounds; Indian Village; The Visitor's Center; and for the village's historical buildings including The Grange; Wiggins House; Faircloth Law Office; Bethany Friends Meeting House; Robert's School; the Hatch House and the General Store.
It also indicates improvements to the old state park property, which the commission has acquired. It suggests the need for bathrooms, a floating boat dock, a boat ramp, a fishing pier, picnic pavilions and benches on the property.
The next step will be narrowing the list to only three to five projects and re-submitting those to Volunteer Wayne/RSVP. Those projects will be listed on the Web site www.volunteersolutions.org/uwwc/volunteer. Volunteers will be matched up with the projects by their skills, said Barbara Stiles with Volunteer Wayne/RSVP, which is based at Wayne Community College and funded by the United Way and the Corporation for National and Community Service.
"This can really be big for you folks," Ms. Stiles told the commission's executive board on Tuesday.
This is the first time the commission has been contacted about being a part of the event. All of the volunteers taking part in the day's projects across the county will gather that morning at the village.
Agencies must fill out a registration form for their projects and send it to Volunteer Wayne/RSVP in the Dogwood Building at Wayne Community College or register on line at www.volunteersolutions.org/uwwc/volunteer no later than Sept. 10.

Make A Difference Day is a national initiative created by USA Weekend Magazine and will take the place of the Day of Remembrance and Caring. Last year, 47 different projects were completed for over 20 different county agencies.
