Jones named nicest
U.S. Rep. Walter Jones appears in the September issue of The Washingtonian as the nation's nicest member of the House of Representatives. Jones came in second the last time the survey was taken in 2002.
The Washingtonian, a monthly magazine for the D.C. metropolitan area, conducts a survey of top Capitol Hill staff members every election year to see how they rank members of Congress in categories that include everything from "spineless" to "best dressed." Jones took the first place honors this year as nicest congressman. His district includes Wayne County.
"I am very honored to be recognized by The Washingtonian in such a positive manner," said Jones. "It is a particularly special acknowledgment since the judges were those people that all of us in Congress work with on a day-to-day basis. I thank them for this kind honor, and I hope to continue to do the best I can to serve the people of the Third District of North Carolina and all the citizens of the United States."
Literacy tutors
The Wayne Community College Literacy and Basic Skills Program needs volunteers to tutor adults in literacy and life skills.
Volunteers are asked to give just two hours a week. The program will hold free training to certify volunteers as Partnership Approach to Literacy tutors.
Training will be done in four sessions set for 5:30-8:30 p.m. on Sept. 13, 15, 20, and 22 in Room 127 of the Pine Building at Wayne Community College. Contact Ann Tyner at 735-5151, extension 717, to register for the training or learn more about the program.
Kids World volunteers
Each year the wood in Kids World Playground must be resealed to keep the structures maintained and looking new.
This year's "Wood Sealing Work Day" is Saturday, Sept. 11, 8 a.m. until about noon. A rain date has been set for Sept. 18.
The playground is at Westbrook Park in Mount Olive on Breazeale Avenue between Park Avenue and Westbrook Street.
Friends of the Park will provide drinks and lunch for all the volunteers.

Bloodmobile
The Wayne County Chapter of the American Red Cross will have a Bloodmobile Friday from 12:30 to 5 p.m. at Southeastern Medical Oncology Center. Donors will receive a free Red Cross T-shirt.
