Information sought
on woman's death
The Goldsboro Police Department is seeking information on the shooting death of Latasha Sutton in the Jefferson Court apartments.
Ms. Sutton's body was found Aug. 26, 2003, by police in Apartment 50 at 1100 N. Jefferson Avenue. The last time that she was seen alive, police said, was about 10:30 p.m. the previous night.
Anyone with information on her death was asked to call police Investigator Chad Calloway at 580-4216 or Goldsboro-Wayne County Crime Stoppers at 735-2255. Callers may remain anonymous and may be eligible for a cash reward of up to $1,000, if their information leads to an arrest.
Shooting ended
series of arguments
This week's shooting death of a 30-year-old Goldsboro man was the result of a series of disagreements between the victim and the alleged shooter, Goldsboro police say.
LaTerance M. Gooding of 200 Hilda Place was gunned down at about 9:15 p.m. Sunday near the Jefferson Court apartments. Police arrested and charged 27-year-old Tavaris Kinte Worsley, who lived in the apartment complex, with the murder.
Police Sgt. David Kelly said the two men had argued not only just before the shooting but also had an earlier disagreement.
Kelly said several people who saw the argument were interviewed. Their information provided leads for investigators to follow and eventually led to Worsley's arrest, police said.
Worsley was wounded several times in a grassy median in front of mailboxes near North Jefferson Avenue and Ninth Street.
A weapon was recovered, Kelly said. It was sent to the State Bureau of Investigation crime lab for analysis.
The victim's body was sent to the state medical examiner's office in Chapel Hill. A preliminary autopsy report has not been completed. A final report may not be ready for two months.
Six hurt in wrecks
Six people were injured and damages were estimated at $28,700 in six recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*Two drivers were injured in a three-vehicle collision at 11:25 a.m. Wednesday on Wayne Memorial Drive near Seventh Street, Goldsboro police said. Albert Dwight Myers, 48, of First Street and Endrid Antoinette Thompson, 36, of North Carolina Street were treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. The other driver, Philip Michael Schaeffer, 45, of Rose Street, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end collision. Damages were set at $2,900.
*A driver said she feel asleep, lost control of her car and was injured when it ran off U.S. 70 near Ebenezer Church Road at 3:40 a.m. Tuesday, a Highway Patrol report said. Heidi Anne Morgan, 18, of Broughton Lane, LaGrange, was released after emergency-room treatment. She was charged with reckless driving. Her car had run off the right side, came back on the road, ran off the right side again, struck a ditch, overturned and struck two mail boxes and a road sign. The car, valued at $4,200, was demolished.
*Both drivers were injured and damages were estimated at $8,000 in a collision at 9:51 a.m. Tuesday at Wayne Memorial Drive and Ninth Street, police said. Katherine Marie Townsend, 56, of South Taylor Street and William Russell Suggs, 62, of East Walnut Street were released after emergency-room treatment. Ms. Townsend, who was making a left turn, was charged with a yield violation.
*Damages were set at $7,000 in a two-vehicle crash at 8:19 p.m. on Dr. M.L. King Jr. Expressway at an exit ramp to North Spence Avenue, police said. One driver, Jaharri Dequane Moore, 17, of West Spruce Street, was charged with a safe-movement violation after the rear-end crash. The other motorist was identified as Bruce A. Tart Jr., 39, of Londonderry Drive.
*Both drivers fled from a collision at about 8:10 p.m. Saturday on Camp Jubilee Road near N.C. 55, the Highway Patrol said. One driver had made a wide turn from a driveway and the minivan that he was operating collided with a southbound car. The registered owners were listed as Concordio Diaz Mejia of Cabin Creek Drive, Seven Springs, and Elias Morales of Al Drive, Seven Springs. Damages were put at $3,300.
*A motorcyclist was injured in a crash with a sport utility vehicle at 4:33 p.m. Friday on U.S. 13 near Providence Church Road, the Highway Patrol said. Rex Allen Williams, 43, of Durham Lake Drive, Dudley, was released after emergency-room treatment. He also was charged with a safe-movement violation. Troopers said the other driver, Rachael Renee Heath, 30, of O'Berry Road, Mount Olive, had started to pass a slower vehicle and the motorcycle, as Williams was making a left turn. Damages were estimated at $3,300.
Investigations
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*Five bank deposits, totaling $7,256.38, from Friendly Mart No. 14 at 335 U.S. 13 South have been reported missing, sheriff's deputies said. A total of $215 has been recovered.
*A burgundy 1987 Ford dump truck was stolen between Monday and Tuesday from a bridge construction site at N.C. 581 North and Claridge Nursery Road, deputies said. The truck, owned by D.W. Lyle Corp. of McKinney, Va., was valued at $60,000.
*Three necklaces, a bracelet, two rings and 15 50-cent pieces were stolen Wednesday after a window was damaged at a home in the 300 block of Woodland Church Road, deputies said. The resident, F.Y. Austin, estimated the value of the property at $608 and damage at $200.
*A DVD-video cassette recorder combination and six DVDs were stolen Wednesday after a door was damaged at a home in the 100 block of Timothy Street, deputies said. The resident, Hank O. Sebourn, estimated his property's value at $279 and damage at $100.
*An orange and black 2000 Yamaha motorcycle was stolen Wednesday from the 100 block of Belfast Avenue, deputies said. The owner and resident, Cleveland Lavon Ward, put a $9,000 value on it.
*A portable electric keyboard was stolen between Monday and Wednesday after a lock was cut on a rental storage unit at 522 N.C. 581 North, deputies said. The renter, Ronnie Eugene Wilson of Goldsboro, said the keyboard was worth $350.
Thefts
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*A stereo system, a DVD player, video-game equipment and a necklace were stolen Wednesday from a home in the 100 block of Hines Drive, police said. The resident, Quenton Lamont Battle, put a $1,175 value on his property.
*About $250 was stolen between Tuesday and Wednesday from several vending machines at the Winn-Dixie supermarket at 211 N. Berkeley Blvd., police said. Damages to the machines was set at $400.
*About $39,806 worth of shingles was stolen between July 15 and Wednesday from a warehouse at 600 N. John St., police said. A total of 160 pallets, each with 36 bundles of shingles, were stolen. They were owned by GAF Materials Corp. of Dudley.
Cherry assault
A health care technician at Cherry Hospital was assaulted Wednesday by a patient and treated for his injuries.
William Jetton was taken to the Wayne Memorial Hospital emergency room, where he was treated and released, a spokeswoman said. The patient was not identified.
Cherry Hospital police could not be reached for comment.
Drug charge
A 52-year-old Goldsboro man was arrested Wednesday by Goldsboro police and charged with a felony drug offense.
Matthew Coley Jr. of North John Street was charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver cocaine. Cocaine valued at $180 was seized. Coley was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $50,000 secured bond. Investigators M.K. Horstmann and Dale Foster assisted in the arrest.
Robbery
A Goldsboro woman was arrested Wednesday by Goldsboro police and charged with felony common-law robbery.
Kerri Leann Huerta, 26, of A Street was accused of robbing someone Aug. 19 on A Street. She was arrested by Investigator Mike Moore and A-shift Officer R. Herring. She was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $5,000 secured bond.
Missing
Two children have been reported missing to Goldsboro police.
*Portia Alicia Jones, 9, of 609 11th St. was described as black, 4-feet-11 and 80 pounds with black hair, brown eyes and a light complexion. She was seen last at 12:45 a.m. Tuesday as she left a school bus in the 1300 block of North Jefferson Avenue. She was wearing a black shirt, black pants and white shoes.
*Marquez Leach, 12, of 1306 N. James St. was described as black, 4-feet-2 and 90 pounds with black hair, brown eyes and a dark complexion. When he was seen last at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Goldsboro Middle School, he was wearing a red shirt and blue jeans.
Anyone with information on the location of either child was asked to call police at 705-6572.
Correction
Scott Allen Farmer, 33, of Neuse Correctional Institution wants it known that he was charged with misdemeanor possession of a stolen generator. The Aug. 17 issue of the News-Argus said he had been charged with felony possession of stolen goods. Farmer pleaded guilty to the charge and was sentenced to 120 days in prison.
