Masked gunman robs gas station
A masked gunman robbed a Goldsboro service station Monday night of an undetermined amount of money, according to a Goldsboro police report.
The robber entered the Spur station at 2000 N. William St. at about 11 p.m., then brandished a small handgun at the clerk, fired a shot into the wall, grabbed the cash drawer and ran away, police said.
The robber was described as black, 5-feet-6 and 165 pounds with a medium build. He wore a ski mask, a black cap, a dark shirt and dark pants. He fled north through the parking lot.
The first officer to arrive, E.M. Goins, secured the store and cordoned off the area. Then Investigator Dwayne Dean took over the case. Dean and other investigators are following up in information developed from interviews, Sgt. David Kelly said today.
Pack house, car damaged in fire
A pack house and equipment inside were destroyed, a car was burned and vinyl siding was melted on two nearby mobile homes during a fire in southern Wayne County.
Pricetown Volunteer Fire Chief Joey McCullen said Monday that the weekend fire at 4963 N.C. 111 South, Seven Springs, may have been caused by heat from a recently used riding lawn mower that had been stored under a shelter.
The pack house, owned by the resident, John Barnes, was valued at $20,000. The contents, including a four-wheeler, a lawn mower and an air conditioner, were valued at $10,000, McCullen said.
Damage was estimated at $700 to one mobile home and $1,000 to the other. Barnes lived in one, the chief said.
An almost-new Ford Mustang, owned by a family member, also was damaged.
Pricetown, Seven Springs and Albertson firefighters needed about 45 minutes to get the 8 p.m. fire under control. They remained for about two and a half hours to investigate the cause and finish salvage work.
Sex charge
A 44-year-old man was arrested Monday by Wayne County sheriff's officers and charged with a felony first-degree sexual offense with a child.
Gary Bradley Neal of Adams Road, Seven Springs, was accused of molesting an 8-year-old child, Detective Sgt. Tammy Odom said. Neal was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $30,000 secured bond. Detective Mike Reid assisted in the case.
Eleven hurt in wrecks
Eleven people were injured and damages were estimated at $45,000 in five recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*Two drivers from Goldsboro were injured and damages were estimated at $13,000 in a two-vehicle collision at 4:16 p.m. Monday at East Elm Street and South Andrews Avenue, Goldsboro police said. Duane Christopher Cobbs, 20, of Wright Brothers Avenue and Barbara Monk Murrain, 54, of Prince Avenue were treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. Each driver was charged with a safe-movement violation. Both said they had the green light. Cobbs was going east, and Ms. Murrain was headed south.
*A westbound driver from Goldsboro was injured in a two-vehicle crash at 6:09 p.m. Monday at Wayne Memorial Drive and Ninth Street, police said. Katrina Hicks Goldsby, 58, of Muriel Street was released after emergency-room treatment. A northbound motorist, Zerafin Ayaia, 64, of Selma, was charged with a stoplight violation. Damages were fixed at $5,000.
*Damages were estimated at $10,000 in a three-vehicle, rear-end collision at 5:15 p.m. Thursday at U.S. 117 and Robert Peel Avenue, the Highway Patrol said. A driver stopping to make a left turn was identified as Delton Ray Warrick, 36, of Memorial Church Road, Kenly. The second motorist was Jason Cleveland Thompson, 25, of Timberline Oak Drive, and the other driver fled. Troopers said the hit-and-run vehicle was registered to Gerald Myers of Pikeville.
*Two people were injured in a two-car crash at 7:09 p.m. Thursday at U.S. 117 and U.S. 13, the Highway Patrol said. One driver, Dorothy Ward Smith, 57, of Bennett's Bridge Road, Mount Olive, was listed today in stable condition at Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. Her passenger, Amanda Oates, 79, of Suttontown Road, Faison, was released after emergency-room treatment. The other motorist, Alma Yesenia Zepeda, 18, of Sandy Lane, Mount Olive, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end crash. Damages were put at $1,500.
*Six people were injured and three vehicles were demolished in a collision at 8:50 a.m. Aug. 16 at N.C. 581 and Pikeville-Princeton Road, the Highway Patrol said. Two drivers -- Michael George Trujillo, 58, of Sleepy Creek Road, Dudley, and Loaiza Carrasquillo, 27, of Beniford Drive, Pikeville -- were released after emergency-room treatment. Ms. Carrasquillo's four passengers -- Desidre Cedre, 34, Edelina Castro, 5, Cayleen Familia, 3, and Elaine Castro, 29, all of Beniford Drive -- also were released after emergency-room treatment. The other driver, Timothy Chad Westbrook, 24, of Massey Holt Road, Princeton, was charged with a yield violation. The report said Westbrook had stopped and then started across the intersection and his eastbound van collided with Trujillo's northbound car that spun around and struck the stopped, westbound auto that Ms. Carrasquillo was driving. Damages were estimated at $15,500.
Break-ins
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*About $2,000 worth of jewelry in a box, a 35-inch television, two DVD players, video-game equipment, a video cassette recorder, six sports jerseys and $60 were stolen Monday from a home in the 600 block of Linen Lane, sheriff's deputies said. The resident, Courtney Davone Larry, estimated the value of his missing property at $3,549.
*Two saddles and two bridles were stolen between Friday and Monday after a barn door was damaged in the 1000 block of South Bentonville Road, deputies said. The resident, Jack Lee, put a $700 value on his property and set damage at $50.
*Two purses with personal papers and a wallet were stolen Monday after a car window was smashed in the Neuse River Shopping Center on U.S. 117 South, deputies said. The car's owner, Stephanie A. Robinson of Williamston, said her property was worth $22 and set damage at $150. The passenger, Deborah L. Thompson of Hampton, Va., put a $36 value on her missing property.
Investigations
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*A home entertainment system, a woman's clothing, a cordless phone, two video cassette recorders, video-game equipment, a satellite receiver and five compact discs were stolen between Sunday night and Monday from a home in the 400 block of Wilson Street, police said. The thief had smashed a window to get inside. The resident, Calvin Pope, estimated the value of the stolen property at $3,659 and damage at $50.
*A small blue scooter was stolen between Sunday and Monday after a door was forced open at Smith Equipment Co. at 1005 N. William St., police said. The scooter was valued at $300.
*Chinaware, pewter candle holders and kitchen items were stolen between June 15 and Monday from a rental storage unit at Always Available Self Storage 416 E. New Hope Road, police said. The renter, Brenda Kennedy of Goldsboro, said her property worth $2,500.
*A Catfish Hunter pocketknife was stolen between Saturday and Monday after a door was damaged at Quality Appliance Service Co. at 1106 N. William St., police said. The pocketknife was valued at $100. Damage was put at $100.
Drug charge
A 28-year-old man from Goldsboro has been arrested by Goldsboro police and charged with a felony drug offense in the 900 block of Hugh Street.
Tyrann M. Artis of Clingman Street was charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana. Police said he had kicked drugs into a manhole. Artis was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $5,000 secured bond.
