Picking up trash will not only help improve the county's appearance, it could also put a little cash in your pocket.

Keep Wayne County Beautiful, the state Department of Transportation, Wayne County and the city of Goldsboro will hold the annual fall Litter Sweep on Saturday, Sept. 18, beginning at 8 a.m.

Volunteers participating in the fall Litter Sweep will have an opportunity to receive cash for trash by finding plastic bottles with coupons attached to them.

The coupons, worth $10 or $20, can be redeemed for cash during the cook-out lunch at Herman Park, when the other prizes are distributed.

The lunch will begin at 11:30, giving volunteers a little more than three hours to work up an appetite.

In addition, picking up litter is good for your health.

"It takes one hour for 10 volunteers to pick up litter on a 3-mile stretch of highway," said Simonne Cato, director of KWCB. "An estimated 171 calories are burned picking up litter."

Corporations, businesses, county and city officials, civic groups, churches, youth groups and individuals are being asked to set aside time on their calendar and make plans to participate.

"While there are parts of Wayne County roadsides not littered, others are in dire need of attention. If there is a littered area that's been bugging you all year, please join us and help do something about it," said Ms. Cato. "Very little volunteer time is asked, but the results are great."

Last spring, Litter Sweep netted five tons of litter removed from Wayne County roadways.

"We need your help to make Wayne County a cleaner, more attractive environment, not only for our residents but for visitors too," said Ms. Cato.
