Driver charged
after car theft
A driver sped from a parking lot Saturday night in a stolen car, crashed into another auto and injured the other driver, was chased by witnesses and police, then slammed into a phone booth and ran away, a Goldsboro police report said.
The driver, Donnie Cox Jr., 18, of Wayne Memorial Drive, was charged minutes later by police with felony hit and run, felony larceny of a vehicle, felony possession of a stolen vehicle, felony fleeing to elude arrest, reckless driving, unsafe passing, a stoplight violation, speeding, driving on a sidewalk and failure to reduce speed to avoid a collision.
He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $10,000 secured bond.
Amanda Elaine Stuckey, 18, of Willow Road, Dudley, was driving on South Berkeley Boulevard, near East Ash Street, at about 9:10 p.m. She pursued the hit-and-run car until losing it in a residential area.
Later Ms. Stuckey went to Wayne Memorial Hospital, where she was treated for minor injuries and released, a spokeswoman said.
Others took up the pursuit. The suspect car turned south on John Street, tried to avoid a stopped vehicle at the stoplight at Elm Street by driving on the sidewalk and then crashed into a phone booth, police said. The driver fled but was apprehended quickly.
Damages in the first wreck were estimated at $1,750. The car that Cox was driving was totaled in the second crash. It was valued at $2,000.
The owner of the stolen car, Liza Marie Hare of Goldsboro, had reported that her 1998 Ford Escort had been stolen.
Passenger injured
A passenger was injured and damages were estimated at $18,000 in three weekend traffic collisions in Goldsboro, police reported.
*A driver said he swerved to avoid a dog at 12:24 a.m. today on West Grantham Street and his car ran into the median and struck a tree near Jordan Boulevard, Goldsboro police said. Jason Scott Elliott, 22, of Mike Circle was charged with failure to reduce speed. He was not injured, but his car sustained about $5,000 in damages.
*Damage was estimated at $8,000 in a one-car wreck at 3:55 p.m. Sunday on Dr. M.L. King Jr. Expressway South near U.S. 70, police said. The driver, Willie Estrella, 20, of Cherry Point, was charged with failure to reduce speed after his car ran off the right side and struck a tree. He said his steering had locked up.
*A passenger from Smithfield was injured the car was demolished at 11:25 p.m. Saturday at West Grantham Street and Dr. M.L. King Jr. Expressway, police said. April Daily, 20, was released after emergency-room treatment. The driver, Allan John Risch, 18, of North Virginia Street, told police that the car struck water in the road, he lost control of it and it struck the guard rail, spun around and stopped in the road. He was not charged. The car was valued at $5,000.
Crime of the Week
The death of Amanda Dale Turner Bullock has been chosen by Goldsboro-Wayne County Crime Stoppers as its latest "Crime of the Week."
Ms. Bullock's body was found July 4, 2003, near the railroad tracks behind Clark Auction Co. on North William Street near Fedelon Trail.
More than a year later, the case remains unsolved. Police are asking anyone with information on the death or any other crime in Wayne County to call Crime Stoppers at 735-2255. Callers may remain anonymous, and they may be eligible for cash rewards of up to $1,000, if their information leads to arrests in felony cases.
Investigations
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*A stereo player and $8 in coins were stolen between Friday and Saturday after a cash register was damaged at La Paws Grooming Parlor at 145 N. Center St., police said. The CD player was valued at $150. Damage was set at $350.
*About $1,500 worth of clothing was stolen Friday after a window was smashed in an apartment in the 900 block of Evergreen Avenue, police said. The resident, Gerald Deon Ramey, estimated damage at $100.
*A stereo compact disc player and a television-DVD player combination were stolen Saturday after a garage door was forced open at a home in the 1500 block of Darby Place, police said. The resident, Pablo Ambriz, estimated his property's value at $1,180.
*A gold, four-door 1998 Lincoln Navigator was stolen between Sunday night and dawn today from the 600 block of South Oak Forest Road, police said. The owner and resident, James Edward Gentry, said the vehicle was worth $17,000.
*A burgundy, four-door 2001 Ford Focus was stolen before dawn today from the 1000 block of East Ash Street, police said. The owner, John Edwin Fail, said he left the keys inside of the locked auto. The car was valued at $2,000.
Break-ins
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*Vandals broke into the Eastern Carolina Athletic Park at 871 Buck Swamp Road between Saturday and Sunday, damaged property and ransacked offices, sheriff's deputies said. Pool tables and coin-operated video games were damaged and the money stolen. The amount of money stolen and damages was not immediately available.
*A breathing machine, two pet birds and a pet hamster were stolen Saturday after two doors were damaged at a home in the 100 block of Timothy Street, deputies said. The bird cage, hamster cage and a clock also were damaged. The resident, Troy Allen Ott, estimated the value of the stolen property at $716 and damage at $420.
Missing
A 13-year-old Goldsboro girl has been reported missing by relatives to police. Shaketa Yvette Jones of 1012 N. John St. was described as black, 4-feet-6 and 110 pounds with black hair, brown eyes and a medium complexion.
When she was seen last at 8:05 a.m. Saturday, she was wearing a yellow short, gray pants and white tennis shoes. Anyone with information on her location was asked to call police at 705-6572.
