More at Four
has openings
The Wayne County Partnership for Children has added 92 More at Four, bringing the total of children served to 414.
That equals a 29 percent increase from last year and a 766 percent increase from its inception in 2002. The More at Four program is Gov. Mike Easley's free preschool initiative that serves eligible at-risk 4-year-olds.
Children must have turned 4 on or before Oct. 16. The 92 additional slots will allow the Wayne County Partnership for Children to open five new classrooms and expand one classroom at Fremont STARS Elementary School.
The Wayne County Partnership for Children is still accepting applications for enrollment at Wonderland Child Care in Seven Springs, Wee Are the World Child Care in Dudley, and Small World Child Care in Goldsboro.

Training set for jail officer certification
A new training session for detention-officer certification begins at Wayne Community College next month.
The state-accredited course provides students with the physical and cognitive skills needed for an entry-level detention officer position and is mandated by the N.C. Sheriff's Training and Standards Commission through the N.C. Community College System.
Class will be held from 6-10 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on some Saturdays for eight and a half weeks. Registration will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 8, at 6 p.m. in Room 210 of the Azalea Building on campus.
Students who successfully complete the course and pass a state certification exam are eligible to work as detention officers in North Carolina. Wayne Community College's graduates have a 100 percent passing rate on that exam and 100 percent job placement.
To enter the program, potential students must have no criminal record, be at least 21 years old, have a valid N.C. driver's license and have a high school diploma or equivalent. The course costs around $150 for registration, supplies and textbooks.

Gen. Hornburg to be replaced
Lt. Gen. Ronald E. Keys has been nominated to replace Gen. Hal M. Hornburg as commander of the Air Combat Command.
Keys is the Air Force's deputy chief of staff for air and space operations.
Hornburg is a former commander of the 4th Fighter Wing at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base and is retiring in January after serving as the ACC chief for two and a half years at Langley Air Force Base in Virginia.
Keys' assignment and promotion to general faces confirmation by the Senate.
Meanwhile, Lt. Gen. Bruce A. Wright, ACC vice commander, has been selected to become commander of United States Forces Japan.
