GFD answers 175 calls

The Goldsboro Fire Department put out two major building fires from among the 175 fire and service calls that it answered in July, according to Chief Bobby Greenfield's monthly report.
A bolt of lightning on July 28 struck the roof of Adamsville Church of God at 3913 McLain St. and started a fire that caused about $15,000 in damages.
Damage was estimated at $10,000 to the building and $5,000 to contents. The building was valued at $500,000, and contents were valued at $200,000, officials said.
A set fire also caused about $500 in damages to a rack of clothing on July 11 at Wal-Mart at 1002 N. Spence Ave.
An off-duty firefighter who was shopping assisted store employees in extinguishing the fire before the first engine company arrived. The building was not damaged.
An investigation of the fire was referred to police. No arrests have been made.
Greenfield said department employees also took part in 452 hours of company training and 1,791 hours of individual training in July.
Department training was conducted in investigating methane labs.
Company training was held in equipment locations, radio communications, gas monitor operations, brush truck operations, water supply, thermal imaging, confined space rescues, rescue skills, street skills, aerial skills, rope skills, forcible entry and a nine-tire drill.
