Two women held
in credit card scam
Two Goldsboro women were arrested Monday and charged with stealing credit cards from shoppers' purses and then using the cards.
LaPleasure Artis, 27, of West New Hope Road and Onea Hodge, 22, of South Slocumb Street were charged by Goldsboro police with financial transaction card fraud and obtaining property by false pretense.
The women were accused of entering businesses, stealing the shoppers' wallets and buying high-dollar items with the credit cards before the victims were aware of the thefts, Investigator Trey Ball said.
Ms. Artis and Ms. Hodge were placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of $5,000 secured bonds.
Sgt. David Kelly and Officers Michael Sweet, Dave Cloutier and Chris Melvin assisted in the case.
Goldsboro police also asked all shoppers to keep their wallets and pocketbooks secured and in sight and to notice people around them.
Police said that anyone who has credit cards stolen should report the theft immediately to law enforcement and to the fraud units of the three credit reporting companies. Those companies are Experian at 1-800-301-7195, Equifax at 1-800-525-6285 or Trans Union at 1-800-680-7289. Victims also should request a copy of their credit report.
Kitchen fire
Unattended cooking was blamed Monday for a kitchen fire that caused an estimated $2,000 in damages to a home at 704 S. Madison Ave., a Goldsboro fire official said.
A resident, James Grimes Jr., found a pan on fire on the stove at about 9 a.m., Assistant Fire Chief Ray Boyette said.
"He took the pan from the stove and tried to get it outside but couldn't," Boyette said. "He threw it in a trash can, catching it on fire. The fire melted the can and set the floor covering on fire."
Fourteen firefighters responded with three engines, a ladder and a command car and needed about 40 minutes to put out the fire, investigate the cause and finish salvage work.
The home, owned by James Grimes Sr., was valued at $85,000. Contents were valued at $10,000, Boyette said.
Stolen generator
A 33-year-old man was arrested Monday by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and charged with felony possession of stolen goods: an 8,000-watt generator.
Scott Allen Farmer of Dyke Smith Road, LaGrange, was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $1,000 secured bond.
Deputy C.R. Schaeffer saw a man driving south on U.S. 13 with the generator in the trunk and stopped the driver. Detective Chris Bezio then determined that the generator had been stolen in Lenoir County. The generator was recovered before the owner knew that it had been stolen, officers said.
Burglary charge
Two teen-agers were arrested Monday by the Wayne County Sheriff's Department and charged with second-degree burglary and larceny.
Phillip Joseph Goff, 17, and David Joseph Lambert, 18, both of Daw Pate Road, were accused of barging into a home in Saulston and stealing property, Detective Sgt. Carl Lancaster said. Their secured bonds were set at $20,000. Detective Sgt. Rick Farfour assisted in the arrest.
Goff and Lambert were arrested last week, charged with 15 vehicles break-ins and jailed in lieu of $65,000 secured bonds.
Drug charges
Two men were arrested Monday by Goldsboro police and charged with felony drug violations.
*An inmate at Wayne Correctional Institution, Kenneth Lee King, 26, was charged with possession of cocaine. He was ordered held in prison without bond.
*Jeffrey Lynn Carter, 37, of Andress Lane, LaGrange, was charged with possession of cocaine at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail without bond.
Forged prescription
A Pikeville man was arrested Monday by Goldsboro police and charged with obtaining a controlled substance by fraud.
James Gilbert Evans, 38, of Britt Street was accused of passing a forged prescription at a Goldsboro pharmacy in June, Investigator Mike Moore said. Evans was released from custody on a $5,000 unsecured bond. Special Agent John Rea of the State Bureau of Investigation assisted in the case.
Thefts
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*Video-game equipment, clothing and household items were stolen between Sunday and Monday after two doors
and a window were smashed at a home in the 100 block of Emmaus Church Road, sheriff's deputies said. The resident, Shannon Vonreal Scott, estimated the value of his property at more than $670 and damage at $400.
*A single-axle trailer with a portable toilet was stolen between Friday and Monday from a work site on Bridgers Road, deputies said. The property, owned by E-Z Flow Porta-Johns of Goldsboro, was valued at $1,000.
Investigations
Goldsboro police are investigating these matters:
*A washer, a dryer and a gas grill were stolen between Aug. 2 and Monday after a lock on a rental storage unit was cut at 416 E. New Hope Road, police said. The renter, Christopher Brian Hill, estimated the value of his property at $343 and damage at $8.
*A radio and compact disc player, a tool set and a speaker were stolen between Sunday and Monday after four car windows were smashed and the car dented in the 800 block of South George Street, police said. The owner, Michael Sam Marks, estimated his property's value at $80 and damage at $820.
*Video-game equipment was stolen Monday after a window was shattered in a home in the 1100 block of North James Street, police said. The resident, Janice Hilliard, put a $280 value on the stolen property and set damage at $50.
*A Dictaphone was stolen between Friday and Monday from the Wayne County Office Building at 301 N. Herman St., police said.
The thief had broken two windows to get inside. The stolen property was valued at $100. Damage was put at $200.
*Two credit cards were stolen between Thursday and Monday after a lock on a cabinet was cut at Southeastern Medical Oncology Center at 203 Cox Blvd., police said. Damage was put at $30.
Cars stolen
Two cars were stolen between Sunday and Monday from outside of the owner's homes, according to Goldsboro police reports.
*A blue, four-door 1993 Chrysler New Yorker was stolen from the 100 block of Hunter's Creek Drive. The owner, Thelma Whitfield, said the car was worth $3,000.
*A white, four-door 1993 Chevrolet Lumina was stolen from the 400 block of East New Hope Road. The owner, Terry William Smith, put a $2,500 value on the auto.
Four people injured
in county collisions
Four people were injured and damages were estimated at $71,900 in 12 recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, the Highway Patrol reported.
*A passenger from Wilmington was injured in a one-car wreck at 1 p.m. Sunday on U.S. 117 near O'Berry Road, the Highway Patrol said. Katie Enright, 29, was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. Her driver, Aaron Thomas Enright, 33, of Wilmington, was charged with exceeding a safe speed after their car ran off the right side of the rain-slickened road and struck a tree. Damage was set at $1,000.
*A driver from Dudley was injured and the car that he was driving was demolished in a wreck at 10:18 a.m. Saturday on Zion Church Road near N.C. 55, the Highway Patrol said. Alejandro Mendez, 21, of Will Anderson Drive was released after emergency-room treatment. He was charged with reckless driving after the car ran off the right side, careened back off the left side, overturned, struck a power pole and overturned again in a driveway. The driver tried to run away but was captured by a Wayne County sheriff's deputy. Damages were put at $9,000.
*A pickup truck was demolished in a crash at 7:20 p.m. Saturday on Long Henry Grady Road near N.C. 55, the Highway Patrol said. The driver fled. Troopers said the truck was registered to Hermilo G. Velasquez of Cabin Creek Road, Seven Springs. The pickup was valued at $6,500.
*Damages were estimated at $6,700 in a one-car wreck at 2 a.m. Friday on Old Grantham Road near Providence Church Road, the Highway Patrol said. Teresa Every Price, 40, of Valleywood Drive, was charged with driving while impaired and reckless driving after the car struck standing water, ran off the left side and struck a mail box and a tree.
*A sport utility vehicle ran off the left side of Arrington Bridge Road near Sleepy Creek Road at about 11 p.m. Friday, then spun sideways across the road and off the right side, struck a ditch and overturned, the Highway Patrol said. The driver fled. The SUV was registered to Prodigius Castrada Ponce of Sharon Drive, the report said. Damage was fixed at $10,000.
*Damages were estimated at $5,000 in a two-vehicle collision at 4:10 p.m. Thursday at Old Mount Olive and Genoa roads, the Highway Patrol said. Edna S. Worley, 86, of U.S. 13 South, was charged with a safe-movement violation. Troopers said Ms. Worley had stopped at the intersection and then started and her eastbound car collided with a northbound sport utility vehicle. The other driver was listed as Joyce T. Hamilton, 48, of Dell Drive, Dudley.
*Damages were put at $6,500 in a two-vehicle crash at 2:35 p.m. Thursday on Tommy's Road near Wayne Memorial Drive, the Highway Patrol said. Donise Marie Thompson, 43, of Woodside Circle, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end crash. The other motorist was identified as Jacquenette B. Mitchell, 50, of Hare Road.
*A driver was injured in a two-vehicle collision at 12:29 p.m. Wednesday at Potts Road and Annie's Avenue, the Highway Patrol said. Shauna Lavonne Allen, 21, of Canterbury Court, Dudley, was released after emergency-room treatment. Ms. Allen also was charged with failure to reduce speed. The other driver, Victoria Renee Carr, 20, of Everittsville Road, Dudley, was slowing to make a left turn into a driveway, the report said. Damages were set at $1,900.
*A driver was injured and damages were estimated at $5,000 in a two-car accident at 11:10 a.m. Aug. 10 at Old Mount Olive and Southern Wayne roads, the Highway Patrol said. Louise H. Grant, 81, of Brewington Drive, Dudley, was released after emergency-room treatment. She also was charged with a yield violation. Troopers said her eastbound car collided with a southbound auto driven by Lawrence Eugene Matthews, 19, of Dogwood Lane, Mount Olive.
*Damages were set at $6,300 in a two-car crash at 8:11 Aug. 9 on Tommy's Road near Hare Road, the Highway Patrol said. One driver, Kim Lorinzo Barrett, 36, of Wilson, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end crash. The other motorist was listed as Alice Faye Buckrham, 45, of Courtney Road.
*A pickup truck was demolished in a wreck at 6:16 a.m. Aug. 9 on Indian Springs Road near Broadhurst Road, the Highway Patrol said. Jimmy Hardy Dail, 51, of Sanderson Road, Seven Springs, was charged with a lane control violation. He said he had dropped his cell phone on the floor and reached to pick it up. Then the car ran off the left side, came back off the right side, struck a ditch and overturned. The pickup was valued at $6,500.
*Damages were estimated at $7,500 in a car-truck collision at 6:44 p.m. Aug. 2 at U.S. 70 and Beston Road, the Highway Patrol said. James Franklin Boykin, 56, of LaGrange Road, LaGrange, was charged with a yield violation. Boykin had stopped and then started across the four-lane divided highway, the report said, and the pickup truck that he was driving collided with a westbound auto driven by Deshanta Lakesha McNeal, 32, of Hardingwood Drive.
