Perjury
A woman who claimed to be someone else during a court hearing has been arrested by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and charged with perjury.
Shuquitta Nicole King, 22, had been accused of identity theft and fraud after buying a bedroom set, a mattress set, a washer and a dryer from Bobby Denning Inc. of Mount Olive, Detective R. Thomas Flores Jr. said.
Ms. King and Quinyarda Denise Fowler, both of Hideaway Circle, Dudley, went to the store at 1126 N. Breazeale Ave. on Jan. 21.
When the store sued Ms. Fowler on July 19 in Small Claims Court for the amount owed, Donna D. Gainey represented the store and presented a copy of a driver's license belonging to the woman. But Ms. Gainey said the woman in court who said she was Ms. Fowler did not fill out the credit application and was the other woman. The woman then fled from the magistrate's courtroom and left her identification card.
Flores checked the name with a file photograph and determined that the first woman was Ms. Fowler.
Ms. King's bond was set at $4,000 on the felony charge.
2 men wanted
Wayne and Johnston County authorities are seeking information on the location of two Smithfield men who are wanted on felony larceny charges.
Ward
George
Kevin Dewayne Ward, 30, and Torral George, 23, were stopped by Johnston County sheriff's deputies at 4 a.m. Monday. The driver did not provide them with a credible account about the trailer that he was pulling with about $14,000 in lawn care equipment. The trailer and the equipment were seized.
Johnston deputies checked with Wayne deputies about a possible theft of the equipment, but none had been reported stolen. But about two hours later, Victor Holland of Claybrook Drive told Wayne deputies that his trailer with lawn-care equipment had been stolen. He identified the stored equipment as his.
As a result of the information, Detective Sgt. Shawn Harris obtained warrants for Ward and George. Wayne Deputy Steve Howell and Detective Sgt. Carl Lancaster have assisted in the case.
Anyone with information on the location of the two men was asked to call Harris at 731-1480, the Johnston County Sheriff's Office at 1-919-989-5010 or Goldsboro-Wayne County Crime Stoppers at 735-2255.
Man wanted
A 36-year-old man who may be living in Nahunta or Pinkney in Wayne County is wanted by Johnston County authorities on charges of trafficking in drugs and failure to appear in court to answer numerous charges.
Beasley
Jimmy Lee Beasley was described as being white, 5-feet-7 and 175 pounds with brown hair and blue eyes. He may be growing a beard and longer hair to change his appearance. He also may be accompanied by a blonde-haired white woman in a Ford Explorer, detectives said.
Anyone with information on Beasley's location was asked to call Detective Sgt. Shawn Harris at 731-1480, the Johnston County Sheriff's Office at 1-919-989-5010 or Goldsboro-Wayne County Crime Stoppers at 735-2255.
Cars strike cow
Three vehicles collided with a wayward cow, about 15 minutes apart on Sunday, on Old Mount Olive Road, near Pecan Road, according to Highway Patrol reports.
A sport utility vehicle, driven by Beulah R. Jones, 49, of Kornegay Street, Dudley, hit the cow at about 11:10 a.m. Then a car, driven by Matthew John Walker, 19, of Cannon Avenue, struck the cow at 11:20 a.m. Five minutes later, a van, operated by Patsy C. Hanegan, 53, of Jill Court, Dudley, also struck the cow. The drivers were not injured, and no charges were filed.
Damage was estimated at $1,500 to the Jones SUV, $2,000 to Walker's car and $1,500 to Ms. Hanegan's van. State Trooper T.L. Hardy said the cow was killed from the collisions.
In other wrecks:
*A left rear wheel came off a westbound sport utility vehicle on Sunday on U.S. 70, spun across the median, struck an eastbound pickup and then ricocheted into a parked car, the Highway Patrol said. David Andrew Stephens, 43, of Gurley Dairy Road, Pikeville, was driving the SUV. The pickup was operated by Harold Leonard Froats, 49, of Ebenezer Church Road. The parked car was registered to Margaret Wiegard of Westwood Drive. Damages were estimated at $4,300. No charges were filed.
*Two cars skidded off a rain-slickened U.S. 117 South and struck a cable barrier in the median, troopers said. Leroy Batts, 40, of Tarheel Estates Lane, Warsaw, and Crystal Shante Bennett, 18, of Lexington Avenue were charged with exceeding a safe speed. Batts' crash occurred at 9:45 a.m. Monday near Country Club Road. Ms. Bennett's wreck happened at 6:30 a.m. Tuesday near O'Berry Road. Damages to the vehicles and the barrier were put at $6,600.
Couple charged
A couple from South Carolina has been arrested by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and charged with writing two felony worthless checks for more than $11,000.
Daly Thomas Potter, 52, and Deborah Goss Malpass, 49, both of Seneca, S.C., also were charged with obtaining property by false pretense. Potter also was held on a probation violation.
Potter, a former Kinston resident, was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $35,000 secured bond. Ms. Malpass was jailed in Smithfield in lieu of a $20,000 secured bond.
Sheriff's detectives had been notified by two Wayne County businesses about the bad checks. An investigation by Sgt. Tony Morris and Mike Reid also revealed that Potter and Ms. Malpass were involved in similar crimes in Johnston County. A truck that the suspects had used was recovered later in Cherokee in western North Carolina.
Morris got a tip about the pair's location. They were arrested in Dover in Craven County, where Ms. Malpass also had lived.
Investigations
Wayne County law-enforcement officers are investigating these reports:
*An estimated $2,090 worth of tools was stolen between Friday and Tuesday from a Progress Energy truck in the Lowe's Home Improvement parking lot at 1202 N. Berkeley Blvd., Goldsboro police said. The tools included six drills, a band saw, a heat gun, a battery charger, a grinder and a die set.
*Two televisions, a DVD player, video-game equipment and $20 in change were stolen Tuesday from a home in the 200 block of Ellington Drive, police said. The resident, Derrick Lamont Lofton, put an $1,190 value on his property. No sign of forced entry was listed.
*A black and silver 2003 Suzuki motorcycle was stolen between Monday and Tuesday from the 3100 block of U.S. 117 North, sheriff's deputies said. The owner and resident, Marisha Malik, put an $8,200 value on the cycle.
*A four-door, gold 1995 Nissan Maxima was stolen between Monday and Tuesday from the 200 block of Whitley Street, police said. The car, owned by the resident, Tyrone McEachern, was valued at $5,000. The keys had been left inside, police said.
