Defense tradeshow scheduled

FAYETTEVILLE -- Officials from the chambers of commerce and economic development groups near the state's military installations will learn more Monday about how to help businesses compete for military contracts.
A member of the N.C. Advisory Commission on Military Affairs suggested that the officials be invited to the seminar. The commission is a panel that makes recommendations to the governor about the economic effect and relationship between the bases and their surrounding communities. Several Wayne County residents are on the commission.
The economic development seminar will be held in conjunction with the third-annual Defense Trade Show at Fayetteville Technical Community College. The trade show will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., and the seminar will be from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The officials are invited to both events, which are also open to the public.
The topic of the seminar is the military's future, so officials can try to recruit businesses and help existing businesses compete for defense contracts.
U.S. Rep. Robin Hayes will be the host of the trade show. Representatives from about 45 large defense contracting firms, including Boeing, Lockheed Martin and General Dynamics and several Defense Department organizations will be available to answer questions on how to get subcontracts and also work with the government.
There will also be workshops titled the Sustainable Sandhills Initiative; Special Opportunities with the Veterans Administration; and How to Do Business with the Federal Government. The workshops are free and no pre-registration is necessary.
