Diversity Day
Goldsboro is starting a new tradition next month by holding its first "Community Diversity Family Fun Day."
The event, scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 7, will be at the H.V. Brown Memorial Park and is sponsored by Coca-Cola Consolidated. Other sponsors include Food Lion, Wayne Memorial Hospital, Staples and Seymour Johnson Air Force Base.
The event will feature live entertainment and food from various cultures, vendors and games. The games are intended for all ages and include potato sack races, 3-on-3 basketball, a run and walk, soccer, softball, tennis, a health fair and pony rides.
Proceeds will go to the HGDC Community Crisis Center, which provides food and clothing to poor people.

School supply drive
Communities in Schools is continuing its school supplies collection drive through Aug. 16 and features a "school bus stuffing" on Friday.
Sudie Davis, executive director of Communities in Schools, said the public is invited to the event from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. at Centrex Properties on Cashwell Drive. A school bus will be parked in the lot and free books will be given to the first 120 children who donate supplies.
Other drop-off sites for donations are The UPS Store on Cashwell Drive, the Chamber of Commerce on 308 N. William St., and the Wayne County public schools administration building on Royall Avenue.

Council resignation
Walnut Creek is losing another council member.
Mayor Ken Ritt announced Wednesday that Councilman Ed Braswell would be moving out of the village in August and would be resigning his seat on the board.
"I haven't received the formal letter yet," Ritt said, "but he's leaving."
Braswell replaced former board member Rick Ingram in March 2003. Ingram resigned, saying he needed to spend more time with his family.
Earlier this year former Councilman Jack Best resigned his seat from the council after being appointed to the county commissioner board. Best replaced former Commissioner Ken Gerrard, who resigned last December.
Kathy Daniels was chosen unanimously by the council in May to replace Best on the board.
Ritt said that he and Councilman Darrell Horne would bring names of people interested in serving to next month's board meeting.
Bloodmobile
The Wayne County Chapter of the American Red Cross will have a Bloodmobile from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday at Lowe's Home Improvement Store on Berkeley Boulevard. Donors will receive a coupon for a free car wash.
