WCC students honored

Wayne Community College students Ina Royer and Thomas Garrou were honored recently by the N.C. Community College System.
The students were selected for recognition at the system's annual Academic Excellence Awards Luncheon in Raleigh for their academic success and leadership.
They joined students from each of the 58 N.C. community colleges and the N.C. Center for Applied Technology.
After graduating this spring with an associate in arts, Mrs. Royer will head to East Carolina University this fall to prepare for a career in teaching. At Wayne Community, where she maintained a 4.0 grade point average, she was a member of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society, tutored French students and won awards for the best short story in both the 2003 and 2004 issues of the college literary magazine Renaissance. She also volunteered in her sons' schools, with Guardian ad Litem and at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base as a translator for multiple languages.
Garrou will earn his associate in science-college transfer degree in the next academic year. He was also an active member of Phi Theta Kappa, organizing a number of projects to benefit community agencies, and contributed to the campus newspaper Voice and Renaissance. In the community, Garrou volunteers with the Red Cross and Dollars for Disabled Veterans and is involved with his church, as well as writing for the Wayne-Wilson News Leader. He is the father of a toddler and is a Gulf War veteran.
"The awards ceremony recognizes just a few of the community college students and graduates who work to improve not only themselves through their studies but also their communities," said H. Martin Lancaster, president of the community college system.
