The Goldsboro Ballet and Goldsboro School of Ballet gave an audience a free preview of dances it has been working on this summer.

The pieces, performed Friday afternoon at Herman Park Center, will continue to be rehearsed and will be presented formally during the "Dance Cornucopia" fund-raising program scheduled for Sept. 12 at Wayne Community College.

Galina Panova, a teacher at East Carolina University and former member of the Kirov Ballet, was one of the instructors who worked with the students during a week-long workshop. Other guest instructors were Sayward Russell, a dance education and performance major at ECU, and Sarah Ray, a professional actress.

The Goldsboro Ballet's artistic director, Peggy Wingate, and its assistant director, Mary Franklin, also taught the dancers.

The instructors created the choreography performed by the dancers.

In addition to dance, emphasis was put on acting, particularly for the numbers "Anything You Can Do, I Can Do Better" and "Hair."

The concert was not all ballet. A modern piece called "The Story" was also performed.

This is the second year in a row that a free preview has been presented at Herman Park Center.
