Transparent toad
The mystery of a pinkish toad found in a Pikeville yard last week is still being researched, but the amphibian has been invited to be guest of honor at a program on Saturday night.
Jana Barfield of the Belfast community said that when she met with Carla Edwards, park ranger at Cliffs of the Neuse, she learned the animal is a transparent Southern toad.
"The coloration was abnormal," Ms. Edwards said in an e-mail to the News-Argus. "I am in the process of finding out more information on the reasons or causes of that coloration."
Mrs. Barfield's 12-year-old son Dylan found the toad while visiting cousin A.J. Barfield. She said they were told that it makes a really good pet and have made a home for it in an aquarium.
Coincidentally, the "Animals of the Month" at the Cliffs are frogs and toads, so the family has been invited to bring the find to the program on Saturday night at 7 at the lake bathhouse. The public is also invited. To reserve a spot, call 778-6234.
Bloodmobile
The Wayne County Chapter of the American Red Cross will have a Bloodmobile on Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Wayne Memorial Hospital. Donors will receive a coupon for a free car wash.
Seven Springs

There will be a grilled pork-chop dinner beginning at 5 p.m. Monday at the Seven Springs Restaurant. Folks can eat in or take out the dinners, which are being sold to benefit the Town of Seven Springs Restoration Project.
Tickets are being sold for the plates at $6 each. The dinners will include boiled potatoes, cabbage, a beverage and dessert.

Hike at night
Join the park ranger at the Cliffs of the Neuse State Park for an evening stroll on Saturday, July 24.
Hikers should meet at the museum parking lot at 8:30 p.m. and wear good walking shoes and bring insect repellent. The hike will go from dusk till dark.
