Safe stolen
A safe and a tip jar with money were stolen before dawn today from Brooklyn Pizzeria at Mar Mac. Wayne County sheriff's deputies saw two men drive away from the restaurant, chased their car and recovered the stolen property.
The thieves turned the older car into a cornfield, jumped out, ran away and have not been captured.
Cpl. Joe Smith said he noticed a suspicious car behind the restaurant at 2497 U.S. 117 South, then turned around and saw the car speed away. Smith radioed another nearby deputy, Karl Rabun, who pursued the car at high speed south on U.S. 117.
Rabun said the thieves' car then turned on U.S. 117 Alternate, turned through a gas station at Outlaw Road, then turned on Potts Road and finally drove into a cornfield.
Smith and Deputy Keith Hartzog then assisted Rabun and his dog, Maggie, in a search. They found the safe with an unknown amount of money and other evidence. The car was towed from the cornfield and stored.
When the deputies returned to the restaurant, they found a side door had been damaged.
Drug charges
Three people were arrested Wednesday and charged with drug offenses in their mobile home in the 1300 block of North Berkeley Boulevard.
Antoine Silvers, 19, and Lilstar Shadae Bullock, 17, were charged with possession of cocaine and maintaining a dwelling for the purpose of keeping and selling cocaine. Ms. Silvers was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $5,000 secured bond. Ms. Bullock was jailed in lieu of a $3,000 secured bond.
Alajahwon Isiah Silvers, 16, was charged with misdemeanor possession of marijuana.
Goldsboro-Wayne County Crime Stoppers assisted in the arrests.
Store robbed
Two men were arrested Wednesday by Goldsboro police and charged with an armed robbery at Lowe's at 1202 N. Berkeley Blvd.
Gary Rance Hurley Jr., 30, of U.S. 117 Alternate South, Dudley, put a chain saw in a cart, took it outside and was confronted by an employee, police said.
The employee, Rex Hatch, a former Wayne County sheriff's deputy, said Hurley pulled a knife and threatened him. Hurley then jumped in a car and fled with another man.
The two men were stopped by a Wayne County sheriff's deputy and detained until Hatch and others could identify them, police said.
Hurley also was charged by the Sheriff's Office with misdemeanor larceny. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of two secured bonds totaling $50,800.
The driver, Durwood Joseph Fields, 33, of Best Street, also was charged with driving while his license was revoked. He was jailed in lieu of a $50,500 secured bond.
Traffic accidents
Four people were injured and damages were estimated at $22,700 in three recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*Two passengers were injured and damages were estimated at $7,500 in a collision at 1:10 p.m. Wednesday at South George and Pine streets, Goldsboro police said. Darlene Langston, 61, of Atkinson, was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital. Mickey Langston, 61, of Atkinson left the hospital against medical advice, a spokeswoman said. They were riding with Lonza Bryan Daniels, 34, of Braswell Road. The other driver, Marcel Edwards, 42, of Hamilton Drive, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end collision.
*A passenger was injured in a one-car wreck at 10:50 p.m. Saturday on Lindell Road near Faro Road, the Highway Patrol said. Jessica Bass, 16, of Lindell Road, Stantonsburg, was released after emergency-room treatment. Michele Bass, 40, of Lindell Road, was charged with exceeding a safe speed after her car hydroplaned, ran off the left side and struck a ditch. Damage was put at $5,200.
*A driver was injured and the sport utility vehicle that he was driving was demolished in a crash at 2:20 a.m. July 8 on N.C. 55 near Townsend Road, the Highway Patrol said. Alonza Donald Mills, 18, of Kinston was released after emergency-room treatment. He said he had swerved off the right side to miss a deer in the road and lost control of the SUV, and it ran off the left side and overturned. No charges were filed. The SUV was valued at $10,000.
Investigations
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*A couch, a love seat, two end tables and decorative items were stolen between Saturday and Wednesday after a window and a door were smashed in a mobile home at Steve Jones Homes at 4407 U.S. 70 East, sheriff's deputies said. The stolen property was valued at $3,000, and damage was set at $650.
*A gold and black 2002 Kawasaki motorcycle was stolen between Tuesday and Wednesday from the 3500 block of N.C. 222 East, deputies said. The owner and resident, Darrell Devon Millard, put a $10,000 value on the motorcycle. The thieves had cut three steel cables in order to steal it.
*A 9-millimeter pistol was stolen between Tuesday and Wednesday after a door was damaged at a home in the 100 block of Clover Ridge Court, deputies said. The resident, Nichelle Hamilton, said the handgun was worth $150. Damage was set at $5.
*A battery charger and a pressure washer were stolen between Monday and Wednesday from Glen Rowe's Tractor and Truck at 311 Rose Road, deputies said. The property was valued at $1,150.
*A pressure washer was stolen between Tuesday and Wednesday from a pickup truck bed in the 400 block of Old Grantham Road, deputies said. The owner, Chris Minchew of Goldsboro, said the washer was worth $1,200.
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*Two basketball jerseys and three basketball hats were stolen Wednesday after a door glass was smashed in a home in the 300 block of East Elm Street, police said. The resident, M.D. Foye, estimated the property's value at $195 and damage at $50.
*A 25-horsepower Evinrude motor was stolen from a boat between Tuesday and Wednesday in the 300 block of South George Street, police said. The owner, Willie Thompson of Seven Springs, put a $2,500 value on the motor.
*A purse and several items were stolen Wednesday after a door was forced open at an apartment in the 300 block of North Hillcrest Drive, police said. The resident, Jennifer Houser, put a $30 value on the property.
Missing
Two people have been reported as missing by relatives to Goldsboro police.
*William Ray Montague II, 37, of 405 Jefferson Ave. was described as white, 6-feet and 195 pounds with brown hair and blue eyes. He was seen last at noon July 4. He may be driving a white 1993 Chevrolet Caprice.
*Latoya Venea Holmes, 17, of 908 Marvin St. was described as black, 5-feet-6 and 145 pounds with black hair, brown eyes and a medium complexion. She was seen last at about 11:30 p.m. Monday.
Anyone with information on the location of either person was asked to call police at 705-6572.
Correction
A charge of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury against Bruce Tyndall, 40, of Vail Road, Pikeville, was lodged for an attack on a man. Wednesday's News-Argus reported erroneously that the victim was a woman.
