Fire at Wal-Mart
A "suspicious" fire damaged women's clothing on a rack Sunday night at Wal-Mart at 1002 N. Spence Ave., causing an estimated $500 in damages, according to Goldsboro fire and police reports.
The fire was put out by employees and an off-duty firefighter who was a customer. Assistant Fire Chief Ray Boyette said the damages could be more because residue from fire extinguishers used to put out the fire damaged more clothes.
The building, valued at $10 million, was not damaged.
Goldsboro police took over the investigation of the fire.
Five hurt in wrecks
Five people were injured and damages were estimated at $37,500 in four recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*A motorcyclist was injured in a wreck at 8:15 a.m. Sunday on True Vine Road near U.S. 13, the Highway Patrol said. Patrick C. Hodges, 57, of Gerry, N.Y., was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. No charges were filed after the motorcycle ran off the right side and struck a ditch. The bike, valued at $1,500, was demolished.
*A driver from Greenville was injured and damages were estimated at $5,000 in a two-car collision at 1:50 p.m. Saturday on Wayne Memorial Drive near Lockhaven Drive, Goldsboro police said. Lelia F. Cox, 59, was released after emergency-room treatment. The other motorist, Leigh Thompson, 36, of Wingate Circle, Pikeville, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end collision.
*Two people were injured and damages were estimated at $6,500 in a two-vehicle crash at 3:20 p.m. Saturday at U.S. 117 and N.C. 581, or Arrington Bridge Road, the Highway Patrol said. A northbound driver, Joyce P. Perry, 42, and her passenger, Ayiana Perry, 4, both of Connie's Walk, Dudley, were released after emergency-room treatment. A westbound driver, Jacob Anthony Gonzalez, 20, of Nancy Drive, Dudley, was charged with a stoplight violation.
*A driver was injured and both vehicles were demolished in a wreck at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Faro and Big Daddy's roads, the Highway Patrol said. Irvin Columbus Rowe, 81, of Chase Street, Eureka, was released after emergency-room treatment. The other motorist, Stephanie Ann Bass, 17, of N.C. 222 East, Fremont, was charged with a yield violation. Troopers said Ms. Bass had pulled from Big Daddy's Road and the car that she was driving collided with Rowe's eastbound pickup. The vehicles were valued at $24,500.
Jewelry stolen
An estimated $8,525 worth of jewelry, three firearms and about 30 compact discs were stolen between Friday and Saturday night from a home in the 100 block of Quail Drive, a Wayne County Sheriff's Office report said.
The resident, Bruce Kellum Basden, told deputies that he had locked the doors. The thief may have used a garage door opener in an unlocked car outside and entered the home through the garage, deputies said.
The jewelry included a diamond pendant, a strand of pearls and a diamond ring. The firearms were valued at $1,000, and the compact discs were worth $300, the report said.
Deputies also are investigating these reports:
*Video-game equipment and a radio, cassette player and compact disc player combination were stolen between Friday and Saturday from a home in the 700 block of Genoa Road, deputies said. The thief had damaged a door to get inside. The resident, V.N. Brown, estimated the value of the stolen property at $600 and damage at $200.
*A burgundy, four-door 2000 Nissan Maxima was stolen Saturday from the 3000 block of N.C. 581 North, deputies said. The resident and owner, Louis Esser, said the car was worth $18,000.
Investigations
About $2,878 worth of property was stolen between July 3 and Saturday from two residents of a home in the 100 block of Banks Avenue, according to Goldsboro police reports.
Michael Jerome Barber said his laptop computer, a gold necklace, a gold bracelet and a video cassette recorder were stolen. The property was worth $2,028.
Michael Lavelle Wheeler reported the theft of a television, a combination television, video cassette recorder and DVD player and a DVD player. His property was valued at $850.
The thief inflicted an estimated $250 in damages to a back door in order to get inside, police said.
Police also are investigating these reports:
*Snack food was stolen between Friday and Sunday after a rock was thrown through a window at Jack's Service Center at 900 E. Ash St., police said. Once inside, the thief also damaged a counter top and a door. The snack food was valued at $33, and damage was set at $225.
*A $150 money order and pictures were stolen between Sunday and dawn today after a truck window was smashed in the 2400 block of East Ash Street, police said. Damage was set at $300. The value of the pictures was not listed.
Drug charge
A 29-year-old Goldsboro man was arrested Saturday by Goldsboro police and charged with a felony drug offense.
Marlow Eugene Holmes was charged with possession of cocaine. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $10,000 secured bond.
Robbery charge
A man has been arrested by Goldsboro police and charged with common-law robbery.
Anthony Garrett, 43, of Rachel Drive was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $5,000 secured bond. He was accused of stealing property July 2, Investigation M.K. Horstmann said.
