Grant to improve polls

The Wayne County Board of Elections has received a $37,125 grant to make polling places more accessible.
The Elections Board will be adding wheelchair ramps, new signs and other features to make it easier for those with limited mobility to vote.
The improvements will not be done before the July 20 primary elections but should be shortly afterward, Elections Director Gary Sims said today. "If we end up having a primary runoff, and the chances are good that we will, they'll be in place." He predicted that voters would notice the difference.
The State Board of Elections is distributing more than $1.6 million to counties to assist with the Help America Vote Act. The grants are intended to help counties meet minimum standards.
The county Elections Board also changed three polling places: Precinct 2, from Mt. Nelson Church in Eureka to Eureka United Methodist Church; Precinct 11, from Wayne Country Day School to Greenleaf Christian Church; and Precinct 29, from Edgewood School to the Wayne County Public Library.
