Waynesborough Village to offer variety of charms

Waynesborough Historical Village will be filled next weekend with games and entertainment during the 11th annual Summerfest.
For three days, July 9 to 11, there will be Civil War re-enactors with cannon fire, birds of prey, tours, tug-o-war contests, pony rides, dancing mules, crafters, Indian village activities, a food vendor and games for all ages.
Friday's activities will begin at 10 a.m. The event is free and open to the public.
On the schedule Saturday is a Dutch Oven Cooking Contest beginning at 9 a.m. The contest will be judged from 1 p.m. to 3:15 p.m., and winners will be announced at the end of the day for the best desserts, breads and main course. People are encouraged to participate in the contest even if they have little or no cooking experience, said Colleen Baker, village administrator. People will also have the chance to sample some of the food.
Also on Saturday there will be heritage crafts from 10 a.m. to noon; a watermelon eating contest at 1:30 p.m.; a watermelon seed-spitting contest at 2 p.m.; a Civil War wedding at 3 p.m.; a Goldsboro Police Department canine demonstration; and live music by the Water Bound Dulcimers and the Wayco Ramblers.
Sunday's activities will begin at 10 a.m. and there will be a Civil War-style church service at 11 a.m.
"This will be a weekend of fun that family and friends will enjoy and remember for years to come," said Ms. Baker.
She is expecting between 1,500 and 2,000 people to attend the event.
