Charges dropped
The remaining seven sex-offense charges against Donald Robert Deaver of Dobbersville Road have been dismissed by the District Attorney's Office.
A Wayne County Superior Court jury deliberated for three days last week and deadlocked on the charges against the 37-year-old defendant.
The charges were two counts each of a first-degree sex offense with a child, indecent liberties with a chi a lewd and lascivious act and one count of a first-degree rape of a child. The jury vote was not announced.
The jury also acquitted Deaver of a first-degree sex offense with a child.
Three other charges -- a first-degree rape of a child, indecent liberties with a child and a lewd and lascivious act -- had been dismissed by Judge Jay R. Hockenbury Jr. of Wilmington.
The trial had started June 21. The jury began deliberations on Monday before telling the judge on Wednesday that it was hopelessly deadlocked.
Teen wounded
A Goldsboro teen-ager walking with a friend in Dudley was wounded Sunday in a drive-by shooting, according to a report filed with the Wayne County Sheriff's Office.
Lemel Shamont Jones, 16, of Isler Street was rushed by ambulance to Wayne Memorial Hospital, where he was treated in the emergency room for a gunshot wound to the left side of his head. He was released later, a spokeswoman said.
Jones was walking at about 6:40 p.m. on Hideaway Circle where he saw a white car speeding away, deputies said. His friend said Jones was bleeding and Jones' mother called 911. The shooter could not be described.
Man robbed
A 54-year-old man was robbed Friday night of $435 and a pair of blue jeans, the Wayne County Sheriff's Office said.
Bill L. Jackson told deputies that a young man came to his home on Wharton Lane at about 9:30 p.m. to pick up $5 that he was owed. Jackson gave the man the money, and then the man struck Jackson in the face, grabbed the jeans and the wallet and fled, deputies said.
The suspect was described as being white, about 18 years old, 5-foot-5 and 135 pounds with short reddish-blond hair.
Van stolen
A Fremont man reported Saturday that his van had been stolen. Four hours later it was recovered in Goldsboro, and a man was arrested and charged with the crime.
Jeremias Bravo Perez, 29, of Fremont said his 1995 Chevrolet Astro van was stolen at about 10:30 a.m. from Herring Road, where he was working in a field. A bicycle was left where the car had been parked, deputies said.
Goldsboro police found the van, valued at $3,000, at about 3 p.m. at Herman and East Walnut streets. The passenger was arrested.
David Earl McCullen, 40, of Herring Road, Dudley, was charged with felony vehicle larceny. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $1,500 secured bond.
Two children injured
Two child passengers were injured and damages were estimated at $9,000 Sunday in two traffic collisions in Goldsboro, police reported.
*The two children were injured in a two-vehicle collision at 9:30 p.m. Sunday on North Berkeley Boulevard near Ridgecrest Drive, police said. Alex Price, 2, and David Price, 3, both of Gray's Mill Road, Snow Hill, were treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. They were riding with Jan N. Price, 28, of Snow Hill. The other driver, James Aaron Barwick III, 17, of Indian Springs Road, Mount Olive, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end collision. Damages were set at $2,500.
*Damages were estimated at $6,500 in a two-vehicle wreck at 1:40 p.m. Sunday at Slocumb and East Mulberry streets, police said. An eastbound driver, Angela W. Kinsler, 43, of N.C. 581 North, Pikeville, was charged with a stoplight violation. Her van collided with a northbound car driven by Philip Steven Talarico, 67, of Country Day Road, police said.
Investigations
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*Two televisions, a scanner, a combination radio and compact disc player and a flashlight were stolen Saturday after a door was damaged at a home in the 1100 block of Selah Church Road, sheriff's deputies said. The property was valued at $755. Damage at the Charlie Johnson home was set at $500.
*A thief smashed a vehicle window, inflicting about $300 in damages, in order to steal $6, deputies said. The owner and resident, Anthony Alphonso Urbano of Ann Street, said the break-in occurred Friday.
*A blue Lowe's riding lawn mower with a 38-inch cut was stolen between Saturday and Sunday from the 1400 block of Old Mount Olive Road, deputies said. The resident and owner, M.M. Thompson, put a $1,000 value on the mower.
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*A box with jewelry, 30 video movies, a video cassette recorder and personal papers were stolen between Saturday and Sunday after a window was smashed at a home in the 800 North Virginia Street, police said. The property, owned by Karen Hodges, was valued at $700. No damage estimate was reported.
*A television, a video cassette recorder, video-game equipment, a bike and a coin collection were stolen between June 26 and Sunday after a window was shattered at an apartment in the 1700 block of Courtyard Circle, police said. The stolen property, owned by the resident, D.M. Siberberg, was valued at $826. No damage estimate was listed.
*A video cassette recorder was stolen between Saturday and Sunday after a door was damaged at a home in the 100 block of Banks Avenue, police said. The VCR was valued at $80. Damage was estimated at $150 at Michael Wheeler's home.
*A purse with credit cards and personal papers was stolen between Saturday and Sunday after a car window was broken in the 2400 block of East Ash Street, police said. The resident and owner, M.L. Waldron, said the property was worth more than $15. No damage estimate was reported.
Drug charges
Two people from Goldsboro were arrested Sunday by Goldsboro police and charged with felony drug offenses.
*William Coker Davis, 44, of Woodside Circle was charged with possession of cocaine and two traffic violations, driving while his license was revoked and an expired registration. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $3,000 secured bond.
*Marilyn Louise Granger, who did not disclose a home address, was charged with possession of cocaine and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia. Ms. Granger, 39, was jailed in lieu of a $2,000 secured bond.
