Burgers burn up;
home damaged
Hamburgers on the stove were cooked more than well done Saturday and ignited a fire that damaged a home at 223 Belfast Road.
The homeowner, John Williams, and his brother saw the fire and ran outside. Neighbors also saw the blaze and called 911.
Eleven Belfast firefighters answered the call at about 3 p.m. with three trucks, and Patetown assisted with about 12 firefighters and four trucks.
"Heavy smoke was visible" when firefighters arrived, said Assistant Belfast Fire Chief David Hollingsworth.
Firefighters needed an hour and 18 minutes to put out the blaze, investigate the cause and finish salvage work.
"They did a good job," Williams said.
The one-floor, wood-frame home was valued at $65,000. Damage was estimated at $15,000 to the home and $5,000 to contents.
The Wayne County chapter of the Red Cross also provided shelter, food and clothing for the residents.
Williams, who moved in the home in 1999, said it also was damaged in a fire about two-and-a-half years ago.
Driver injured
One driver was injured and damages were estimated at $6,900 Friday in two traffic collisions in Goldsboro, police reported.
*A driver was injured in a four-vehicle, chain-reaction collision at 2:50 p.m. Friday on West Grantham Street near an entrance ramp to Dr. M.L. King Jr. Expressway, the U.S. 70-117 bypass, Goldsboro police said. Jennifer Lane Mooring, 26, of Johnson Branch Road was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital. She also was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end collision. The other drivers were identified as Brenda S. Walton, 46, of West Boundary Street, LaGrange; Valerie Lynn Ward, 35, of Elon, and Josephine W. White, 40, of Raleigh. Damages totaled an estimated $$900.
*Damages were estimated at $6,000 in a one-truck wreck at 11:30 a.m. Friday at North and Nelson drives, police said. The driver, Kendran Montrae Coleman, 16, of Cove Place, was charged with a safe-movement violation. Police said he had started a left turn onto Nelson Drive and the pickup that he was driving struck a fire hydrant. Damage was set at $4,000 to the truck and $2,000 to the hydrant.
Break-ins
An estimated $3,625 worth of property was stolen Friday after a door was damaged at a home in the 1000 block of Mills Road, a Wayne County sheriff's report said.
The resident, C.R. Acconcia, reported the theft of a computer and printer, a a diamond ring, an opal and diamond ring, a gold chain, a 27-inch television and a combination DVD player and video cassette recorder.
Sheriff's deputies also are investigating these reports:
*Video-game equipment, two bracelets and a DVD player were stolen Friday after a window was smashed at an apartment in the 100 block of Foxcroft Drive, deputies said. The resident, J.L. Walker, put a $1,100 value on the property. No damage estimate was reported.
*A wallet with $60 and personal papers and a case with 15 compact discs were stolen between Thursday and Friday after a car window was broken in the 200 block of Ruby Belle Way, deputies said. The owner and resident, A.S. Turnage, said the property was worth $140. No damage estimate was listed.
*A Toshiba laptop computer was stolen between Tuesday and Wednesday from a truck in the 500 block of Earl Drive, deputies said. The resident and owner, B.S. Hoskins, said the computer was valued at $1,100.
Investigations
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*An amplifier, speakers and 300 compact discs were stolen between Thursday and Friday after a vehicle window was smashed in the 400 block of Royall Avenue, police said. The owner, Glenn M. Brock of Goldsboro, estimated the value of his property at $4,575 and damage at $150.
*Shoes, clothing, three pocketbooks and personal papers were stolen Saturday after a door and furniture were damaged at a home in the 500 block of East Mulberry Street, police said. The resident, Letarcha McGhee, estimated the property's value at $2,615 and damage at $3,500.
*An in-dash compact disc player and radio combination was stolen between Thursday and Friday after a car window was smashed in the 700 block of North William Street, police said. The owner, Kimberly S. Lane of Dudley, said estimated the property's value at $400 and damage at $300.
Drug charges
A 22-year-old Goldsboro man was arrested Saturday by Goldsboro police and charged with three felony drug offenses, including possession of marijuana in a prison, Wayne Correctional Center.
Byron Nevell George of Rosewood Road also was charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana and maintaining a vehicle for the purpose of keeping and selling marijuana. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $4,500 secured bond.
