Who makes the most?
So, you think the governor is the top-paid official in the state Capitol?
Well, actually there are at least three other people who make more than him, excluding university and community college officials, according to the N.C. Citizens for Business and Industry.
Gov. Mike Easley makes $118,430 a year. But the top-paid official is the state controller, at $130,078.
Next comes the state's chief information officer, at $130,000. Then comes the chairman of the Employment Security Commission, at $129,913.
The chief justice of the state Supreme Court makes the same amount as the governor.
The lieutenant governor makes $104,523.
New phone system
The Wayne County Clerk of Courts Office and District Attorney's Office will have new phone systems this week.
The main telephone numbers -- 731-7910 for the clerk's office and 731-7913 for the district attorney's office -- will remain the same. But divisions in the clerk's office and individuals in the district attorney's office will have their own numbers.
The new system may be in operation as early as Monday.
Help for job seekers
Four courses will be offered by Wayne Community College next month for under- or unemployed adults.
The Continuing Education Department will offer a week-long course in "Computer Basics for the Job Search," starting July 26. The three-week course of "Work-Life-Balance" begins July 5 and teaches such skills as how to get a job and time management.
Both classes will be held from 9 a.m. to 12:50 p.m. on the main campus in Goldsboro.
Two other courses start July 6 and will be offered off campus.
"Introduction to the World of Work" is an eight-week course set for 9-11: 50 a.m. that covers conducting a job search, interviewing skills and tips for making a good first impression. "Money Smart" helps participants understand real-life economic concepts related to their roles as employees. It runs from 3 to 4 p.m. for five weeks.
Fees range from $55 to $60 per course but may be waived depending the student's employment or salary status. Consultation with the program coordinator is required prior to registration. Contact Michelle Hines at 735-5151, extension 270, for more information.
