Stealing from elderly
A Goldsboro woman was arrested Wednesday by Goldsboro police and accused of stealing checks from a 99-year-old resident of a nursing home and making them out to herself.
Cindy Ramona Dawson, 31, of South Leslie Street was charged with felony forgery and felony uttering. She was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $35,000 secured bond.
Police Investigator Mike Moore said Ms. Dawson had stolen the checks from a patient at the Brian Center, where the defendant had worked, forged them and cashed them at a Goldsboro bank.
Drug charges
A 23-year-old man was arrested Wednesday by the Aggressive Criminal Enforcement Team of the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and charged with two felony drug offenses.
Bertin Alvilez, who did not disclose a home address, was arrested during a traffic stop on William Street in Goldsboro.
Alvilez was charged with trafficking in cocaine by transportation and trafficking in cocaine by possession. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $500,000 secured bond.
Woman shot
A 19-year-old woman was shot in the leg Tuesday night and then gave conflicting stories where the shooting took place, Goldsboro police said today.
Jessica Joann Bass of Grantham School Road, Mount Olive, told police that the shooting occurred in the Pinewood Square parking lot on North Spence Avenue. Later she admitted that she was shot as she walked on Evans Street, Investigator Mike Horstmann said.
Ms. Bass said she had driven herself to the Wayne Memorial Hospital emergency room, where she was treated and released.
Charges are pending against Ms. Bass, Horstmann said.
Fire at mill
DUDLEY -- A mechanical malfunction caused a fire on Wednesday in the planer mill at Georgia-Pacific Corp. sawmill on Old Mount Olive Road in Dudley, a fire official said.
"We took the ladder truck and squirted water on it for about two hours and knocked it down," Dudley Fire Chief Kendall Lee said.
Lee said the fire spread into ductwork and a loading bin. He estimated damages at about $8,000.
Dudley responded to the 8:30 a.m. call with three trucks. Mount Olive and Arrington volunteers assisted.
Dryer fire
An electrical failure was blamed Tuesday for a fire that started in a dryer in a home at 119 Sandy Drive, a Goldsboro Fire Department official said today.
The fire caused an estimated $500 in damage to the Karen Cox home and $2,000 in damages to contents. The home was valued at $71,000, and contents were worth $30,000, Assistant Fire Chief Gary Whaley said.
Fifteen firefighters answered the 10:27 a.m. alarm with three engines, a ladder truck and a command car. They remained an hour and 12 minutes to put out the fire, ventilate the home, investigate the cause and finish salvage work.
The fire was contained in the laundry room, but smoke damaged the entire home, Whaley said. No one was injured.
Chief has wreck
PRINCETON -- Princeton Police Chief Eddie Lewis was involved in a two-vehicle collision Monday at U.S. 70 and North Pine Street. The other driver was charged with a stoplight violation, according to a Highway Patrol report.
Lewis was going north at about 8:10 a.m. The other driver, Shawn Sebby, 24, of Cherry Point, was going east.
Lewis said he heard the other vehicle's brakes and he sped up but the left rear door of his police car was struck. Damage was estimated at $2,800 to the police car at $1,500 to Sebby's vehicle.
Vehicles stolen
Two separate thefts of vehicles have been reported to the Wayne County Sheriff's Office.
A dump truck pulling a trailer with a bulldozer was stolen between Tuesday and Wednesday from the 1600 block of Pikeville-Princeton Road, a sheriff's report said.
The owner, Jeffrey Lynn Jennings of Goldsboro, said the red 1971 International dump truck was worth $4,000, the yellow 1996 dual-axle trailer was worth $4,500 and the 1980 Caterpillar bulldozer was worth $20,000.
An EZ Go golf cart and a 9-foot trailer also were stolen between Friday and Saturday from the 600 block of N.C. 55 West, near Mount Olive, deputies said. The resident and owner, Victor Boykin, put a $6,000 value on his property.
Employee theft
A Goldsboro woman was arrested Wednesday night by Goldsboro police and charged with nine felony counts of larceny by an employee.
Babette Daniels, 39, of Bright Street was accused of stealing $1,123 worth of property from the Lowe's store at 1202 N. Berkeley Blvd., where she had worked as a cashier, police said. She was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $15,000 secured bond.
Break-in charge
A 57-year-old Goldsboro man was arrested Wednesday by Goldsboro police and charged with breaking into the Community Soup Kitchen at 312 N. James St.
David Franklin Potter, who did not disclose a home address, was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $15,000 secured bond on the felony charge.
Liquor theft
At least one bottle of liquor was stolen Wednesday from the ABC Store No. 1 at 206 E. Mulberry St., a Goldsboro police report said.
The thief had removed a door glass in order to get inside. The liquor was valued at $26.
Car stolen
A black, four-door 1989 Ford Crown Victoria was reported stolen Wednesday from the Wayne Motel parking lot at 801 W. Grantham St., Goldsboro police said.
Tony Darden of West Edwards Street, Princeton, told police that he had left the key in the ignition at about 2:30 a.m. When he returned at 10:30 a.m., the car was gone.
In the meantime, police found the car at 7:18 a.m. at North John and Swan streets, where it had struck a power pole. The driver then fled. The car, valued at $3,500, was registered to Darden's wife, Mary L. Hippensteel.
Missing
A 14-year-old Goldsboro boy was reported missing Wednesday by his mother to Goldsboro police. Rashard Oliver of 1218 Franklin St. was described as black, 5-feet-2 and 110 pounds with black hair, brown eyes and a dark complexion.
Oliver was seen last at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday. No clothing description was available. Anyone with information on his location was asked to call police at 705-6572.
