Matthew Bradley Friedel was recently named Star Student by the SC Dillon County Chamber of Commerce for the highest district SAT score. He is the 2004 Salutatorian and honor graduate of Latta High School in Latta, S.C.
Other awards received include the Academic Honor Diploma awarded by the SC state board of education for superior academic achievement and the U.S. Army Recruiting Battalion award for work done in the Latta High School JROTC.
He is the son of Phyllis and Joe Sikes of Latta, S.C., and Buddy and Sandy Friedel of Kinston. His grandparents are Peggy Davis of Goldsboro and the late John W. Davis of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Kathy Friedel of Goldsboro and the late Chief Master Sgt. Russell W. Friedel. He will attend Furman University in Greenville, S.C., in the fall.
Kim Lee Jones, a senior at East Carolina University, has been named to the Chancellor's List for the Spring 2004 Semester, earning a 4.0 grade point average. She holds the ranking of first in the senior class of 6,257 students and first in her department of 145.
Miss Jones is a political science major and was recently inducted into Pi Sigma Alpha Honor Society.
She is the daughter of Don G. Jones of Goldsboro and a 1999 graduate of Rosewood High School.
Erika Ann Beasley, granddaughter of Peggy Hollowell of Grantham and the late Carl Hollowell, graduated cum laude from North Carolina State University on May 15 with a bachelor of art's degree in communications and a minor in Spanish. Miss Beasley is the daughter of Paul and Connie Feige of Charlotte and Dr. and Mrs. Robert E. Beasley of Miami.
Jennifer Lauren Dudley of Goldsboro graduated magna cum laude with an associate's degree from Louisburg College. She was the recipient of the college's Allen P. Brantley Award for the highest full-time two-year scholastic average for a female student.
Reymond Tiongson Pejera of Goldsboro graduated from Louisburg College. He received an associate's degree during commencement ceremonies in May.
Erwin Mark Kromeke of Goldsboro earned a 3.6 or higher grade point average for the spring semester and is on Heritage Bible College's Dean's List.
Jessica Lynn Newsome, who is a junior at Appalachian State University, was inducted into Alpha Chi Honor Society on April 26. She is the daughter of Mark and Regina Newsome of Pikeville and the granddaughter of W. H. "John" and Faye Hargrove of Mount Olive and Lou (Newsome) Sasser of Pikeville.
Carrie Lee Heyer of Goldsboro and Heather Nicole Rouse of Seven Springs were among the graduates receiving degrees during spring commencement exercises at Chowan College. Ms. Heyer received a degree in criminal justice and Ms. Rouse received a degree in business administration.
Leslie Erin Sugg of Goldsboro and Elizabeth Diana Moore of Mount Olive were recently installed in Campbell University's chapter of Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society. Phi Eta Sigma was formed to encourage and reward academic excellence among freshmen enrolled in institutions of higher education.
Brandon Carl Hargrove and Misty Anne Cordell of Goldsboro and Lindsay Marie Johnson of LaGrange earned a 3.5 or better grade point average for the spring semester and are on the dean's list at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va.
Ashley Gray has been recognized as a United States National Honor Roll Award Winner by the United States Achievement Academy. A student at Leland Middle School, she will appear in the United States Achievement Academy Official Yearbook which is published nationally. She is the daughter of Dean and Kim Gray of Leland. Her grandparents are Virgil and Barbara Baldwin of Mount Olive and Walter and Mary Minshew, Willie and Barbara Gray and Margaret Ambrose of Goldsboro.
Tia Lynette Bell of Goldsboro recently participated in the Governor's Page Program in Raleigh. Miss Bell spent a week in providing administrative support as a page for the Department of Commerce. She is the daughter of Tino and Toye Bell and is a freshman at Mount Zion Christian Academy.
Christine Fairchild, a junior chemistry major at Cedarville University in Ohio, received The Patterson College Chemistry Award during the recent Honors Day program. Sponsored by the Dayton Section of the American Chemical Society, this award is given to an outstanding junior chemistry major. Miss Fairchild is the daughter of Stephen and Sarah Fairchild of Goldsboro and is a 2001 graduate of Rocky Bayou Christian School in Niceville, Fla.
Brandy Michelle Phipps, daughter of Shannon Phipps, served as a page in the North Carolina Senate during the week of May 31 through June 4. She is a rising senior at Wayne Country Day. Her sponsor was Senator John Kerr III.
