Jacksonville man
faces more charges
A Jacksonville man accused of breaking into several fast-food restaurants in Wayne County now faces more similar charges.
Ernest Arthur Deans II, 26, was charged Tuesday by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office with breaking and entering and safecracking.
Deans was accused of breaking into the Andy's Restaurant in Five Points Plaza in Mar Mac on Feb. 17 and stealing money from the safe, Detective Sgt. Tony Morris said. His secured bond on the two felony charges was set at $150,000.
Deans had been arrested by Goldsboro police and charged with breaking into the Andy's Restaurant on North Spence Avenue on May 8. He also was charged with breaking into two other Andy's restaurants in Wayne County.
Deans is being held in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of secured bonds totaling $300,000.
Morris said 17 Andy's restaurants in eastern North Carolina have been broken into this year. These break-ins are being investigated by other law-enforcement agencies.
Passenger is now
in serious condition
A passenger injured in a predawn fatal wreck on N.C. 111 North was listed Tuesday in serious condition at Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville, officials said.
Henry Lauture, 27, of Cuyler Best Road was injured in a one-car wreck at about 1:10 a.m. Sunday. He was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital, stabilized and then transferred to Pitt Memorial.
The driver, Daniel Schade, 27, of 1881 N.C. 111 North, was killed when his speeding car ran off the right side, struck a driveway culvert, went airborne and overturned. State Highway Patrol Trooper Robert Thaxton estimated the car's speed at 125 mph, based on evidence found at the scene.
Meanwhile, five other people in recent collisions were treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said.
Four people -- Ian Cole Jacobs, 17, of West Raintree Lane; Lagislia Bernadetta James, 29, of Williamston; Shontell Horton, 18, of Washington, N.C., and Crystal Swain, 15, of Greenville -- were injured Friday night in a collision at U.S. 13 and Saulston Road. The other, a pedestrian, Anthony Dwight Stokes, 28, of East Elm Street, was struck Monday by a car on North Herman Street.
Three hurt in wrecks
Three people were injured and damages were estimated at $25,170 in three recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*A driver reached for his cell phone that had fallen and then his car collided with a stopped auto at 11:40 a.m. Tuesday at North George and West Grantham streets, Goldsboro police said. Marco Maurice Edwards, 22, of North Audubon Avenue, was charged with failure to reduce speed. The other motorist, Willar Bryant Royal, 54, of Nahunta Road, Pikeville, was injured in the crash. She was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital. Damages were put at $70.
*Damages were estimated at $7,000 in a two-truck collision at 7:35 p.m. Tuesday on North Spence Avenue near Cashwell Drive, police said. One driver, Christopher Wayne Preston, 21, of West Raintree Lane, was charged with suspicion of driving while impaired and a yield violation. Police said he had left a parking lot and his pickup collided with a northbound pickup driven by Diana Fiona Buckingham, 35, of Kinston.
*Two people were injured and the car was demolished in a wreck at 1:25 p.m. Monday on Forest Knolls Road near Oak Circle Drive, the Highway Patrol said. The driver, Nathaniel Bruce Britt, 17, of Forest Knolls Road, and his passenger, Jonathon Robinette, 17, of Sourwood Road were released after emergency-room treatment. Britt was charged with reckless driving after the car ran off the right side and struck a mail box and a driveway culvert. The car, valued at $18,000, was demolished. Damage to the mail box was set at $100.
Investigations
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*The back doors, several walls and a radio were damaged between May 25 and Tuesday in a rental mobile home in the 100 block of South Running Deer Circle near Dudley, sheriff's deputies said. The owner, John C. Anderson of Faison, estimated damage at $4,000.
*A 14-foot aluminum jon boat, a Yamaha outboard motor and a trailer were stolen between May 30 and Tuesday from the 500 block of Bladestone Drive near Pikeville, deputies said. The owner and resident, Grover C. Edenfield, said his property was worth $1,700.
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*Two necklaces, a charm and a man's watch were stolen Tuesday after a car window was smashed in the 100 block of Hines Drive, police said. The owner and resident, Quenton Lamont Battle, estimated the property's value at $710 and damage at $250.
*A cell phone was grabbed Friday from a Dudley woman's hand at a night club at 800 Corporate Drive, police said. Latoya R. Evans put a $40 value on the phone. She could not describe the robber.
Fraud charges
A 42-year-old Dudley woman was arrested Tuesday by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and charged with three felony counts of financial identity theft.
Deborah Lanette Daniels of Sleepy Creek Road was accused of using a former co-worker's name and Social Security number to open three credit accounts and charging about $37,000 to them, Detective C.M. Bezio said. She was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $40,000 secured bond.
Car burned
A 1992 Toyota Corolla was destroyed Tuesday night in a fire on Oakland Church Road, according to a Wayne County Sheriff's Office report.
When deputies arrived, the engine compartment was still on fire. Oakland volunteer firefighters answered the 11:45 p.m. call and put out the blaze. The cause of the fire remained under investigation. The car, valued at $500, was registered to Andres Roberto Rivera of Raleigh.
Clarification
A report in Sunday's News-Argus about an assault at Merry-Go-Round Child Care at 2206 N. William St. contained incorrect information.
The business owner, Annette L. Edwards of Goldsboro, was not assaulted. A woman leaving a nearby night club on Thursday had tried to run over a man and crashed through the chain-link fence and struck a swing set at the business. The property damages, estimated at $1,050, were not reported until Friday.
