Pikeville gets new mayor, new commissioner

PIKEVILLE -- The town board elected a new mayor, mayor pro-tem and commissioner Monday and will now move ahead at full capacity.
Herb Sieger resigned as commissioner and mayor pro-tem and then was nominated for mayor. He was elected unanimously. Two people were nominated to fill his commissioner seat -- Luke Vail and Johnnie Weaver. They received the same number of votes and Mayor Sieger broke the tie by voting for Weaver, who would fill Sieger's position until November 2005.
Weaver is on the Pikeville planning board and would have to resign that position to take over the commissioner seat. He is expected to accept the seat.
Commissioners Al Greene and Bruce Thomas were nominated for mayor pro-tem and they both received one vote. Greene withdrew, so Thomas was elected.
This shifting of board members came after former Mayor Tony Medlin resigned at the beginning of May. He has moved to New Bern to focus on his business, Accurate Appraisal Service.
After the elections, Sieger said the town receiving the parks and recreation grant was the second best thing to happen in a long time, next to the sewer grant. The town received a $97,087 grant that will enable them to demolish the old school building and improve the parks and recreation facilities for everyone in the community. The town is required to match the grant and the board has already placed its matching portion in the upcoming budget.
The board applied for the state grant in February after developing a three-year master plan for the park. Greg Meshaw with Municipal Engineering Service Co. used the plan when applying for the grant. The board also applied for a federal grant in March, but did not qualify for it.
