Armed robbery
Two men robbed a convenience store clerk Thursday night, a Wayne County Sheriff's Office report said.
The clerk told deputies that the robbers entered the Handy Mart No. at 5458 U.S. 117 Alternate South, Dudley, at about 10:42 p.m., displayed a handgun and demanded money.
After the robbers grabbed the cash, they ordered the two clerks to get on the floor and then fled, deputies said. They were black, wore black T-shirts, blue jeans and bandannas.
Drug charge
A 39-year-old man from Goldsboro was arrested Thursday by Goldsboro police and charged with a felony drug offense after he tried to avoid a traffic checkpoint.
Colin Lewis Harris of East Walnut Street was charged with sale and delivery of marijuana. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $4,000 secured bond.
Officer John Hunt said Harris turned around at a checkpoint at South Herman and East Pine streets, threw out a bag of marijuana and fled. He was arrested a short distance away.
Seven hurt in wrecks
Seven people were injured and damages were estimated at $21,850 in six recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*Two people were injured and damages were estimated at $8,000 at 12:30 p.m. Thursday at South John and Head streets, Goldsboro police said. Benita Lynn Atkinson, 41, of Head Street, and her passenger, Deloris Atkinson, 69, of South John Street, were treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital. The driver of a tractor-trailer, Martin Auston Mitchell, 60, of Franklinton, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end collision.
*A driver was injured at 12:05 a.m. today when his moped collided with a car at North George Street and the U.S. 117 bypass, police said. Carl Wayne Hare, 39, of Stevens Mill Road was released after emergency-room treatment. Hare also was charged with suspicion of driving while impaired and failure to burn a headlight. The other motorist was identified as Sarah A. Faison, 69, of Level Street. Damages were set at $3,500.
*The driver of a tractor-trailer was charged with a safe-movement violation at 9:13 a.m. Thursday on Worrell Street, where his rig struck an overhead wire, Goldsboro police said. When the line was pulled down, two poles also were broken, police said. The driver was identified as James Preston Morgan Jr., 39, of Force Road. Damage was put at $150 to the telephone poles and line. The Covenant Transport rig from Oklahoma City was not damaged.
*A Wayne County Board of Education van was involved in a collision with a car at 8:52 a.m. Thursday at Dollard Town and Ditchbank roads, the Highway Patrol said. The driver of the car, Dan Mitchell Pearce, 73, of New Hope Road, LaGrange, was charged with a yield violation. The driver of the van was identified as Raymond Roscoe Rouse Jr., 54, of Griffin Road, Snow Hill. Damages were put at $1,700.
*Three people were injured and damage was estimated at $5,500 in a wreck at 3:15 p.m. Wednesday on Wayne Memorial Drive near Quail Croft Drive, the Highway Patrol said. Lou Anne Arthur, 32, and her passengers, William Arthur, 13, and Krystal Arthur, 9, all of Hill Street, were released after emergency-room treatment. Lou Anne Arthur said she drove off the right side to avoid a collision with an oncoming tractor-trailer. Then her car crossed a ditch and struck a power pole.
*Two people were injured at 3:41 p.m. Wednesday at Tommy's and Hare roads, the Highway Patrol said. Jacqueline B. Ellis, 37, and her passenger, Lenora Sutton, 45, both of Tinderwood Drive, were released after emergency-room treatment. Richard Lowell Walker, 40, of Wayne Memorial Drive, Pikeville, was charged with a yield violation. Damages were set at $3,000.
Thefts
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*An estimated $3,780 worth of property was stolen from a home in the 100 block of Dory Circle near Dudley. The resident, Shawn Laville Washington, reported the theft of 75 DVDs, a DVD player, two large-screen televisions, video-game equipment and a gold-nugget watch. The thief had pried open a door to get inside, deputies said.
*A .357 Magnum handgun, about $300 in loose change and other property were stolen between May 20 and Thursday from a home in the 300 block of Becton Circle. The resident, Jimmy Claude Ferguson Jr., put a $710 value on his property.
*A staple gun and a drill were stolen from a van in the Johnston Ambulance Service parking lot at 2803 U.S. 70 West. The thief also damaged the windshield, a door lock, a side mirror and the ignition switch. The owner, Royce R. Quinn, estimated the value of the stolen property at $500 and damage at $725.
*A window air conditioner was stolen and a door was damaged between Wednesday and Thursday at a home in the 100 block of Timothy Street. The resident, N.J. Williams, said the air conditioner was worth $110 and set damage at $125.
Investigations
Goldsboro police are investigating these matters:
*Two windows on a car were damaged by gunshots, Goldsboro police said. William Davis of Mount Olive, had parked the car at a night club at 802 Corporate Drive. Damage was set at $400 the car, owned by Donnie Ray McCoy Jr. of Mount Olive.
*A man jumped across the counter at the Spur gas station at 2000 N. William St., stole an undetermined amount of cash from the register and the surveillance videotape and fled, police said. The clerk told officers that she was taking the trash out as the theft occurred.
Continuance granted
A continuance was granted in the case of the Dudley woman arrested Friday outside graduation ceremonies at Spring Creek High School.
Connie L. Waddell, 38, of Beaver Drive, Dudley, charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest by Wayne County Sheriff's Office, appeared in District Court on Wednesday. Her next court date was set for July 28.
According to Ms. Waddell, she was denied admission to the ceremonies along with several others. She told the News-Argus that reports that she was disorderly were incorrect and that she had only been upset that her family was unable to see her nephew receive his diploma.
