New council member

The Walnut Creek Village Council unanimously elected Kathy Daniels to complete the term of former council member Jack Best.

Best left last month to serve as a Wayne County commissioner.

Mrs. Daniels was not present at Wednesday's meeting, but will be sworn in at the council's June meeting.

Sarah's Refuge to receive $41,000

Sarah's Refuge for battered women and children in Warsaw will receive a $41,000 federal grant.

The money goes to programs that help at-risk youth and victims of domestic violence.

The announcement came Wednesday from the office of U.S. Rep. Mike McIntyre, who said $1.9 million in federal money has been approved to help fight crime and violence in southeastern North Carolina. The money goes to eight counties: Brunswick, Columbus, Cumberland, Duplin, New Hanover, Pender, Robeson and Sampson.
