A group of Eastern Wayne Middle School students has created a new addition to Herman Park.

As part of a construction challenge for next month's national competition of the Technology Students Assoc-iation, the students built a handicapped-accessible picnic table.

Students Brooke Newsome and Geordi Brown devised the plan and specifications to meet the construction challenge.

Goldsboro Mayor Al King, left, with Eastern Wayne Middle School students Kristin Mewborn, Anthony Otellio, Brooke Newsome, Geordi Brown, and their adviser, Wilson Mewborn, are behind a handicapped-accessible picnic table made by the students and donated to Herman Park.

Kristin Mewborn and Anthony Otellio also contributed their time as part of the team.

They contacted Richard Slozak, Goldsboro city manager, and received approval to donate the picnic table once it was completed.

The finished table measures 12 feet long and seats eight people in addition to the two-wheelchair accessible seats.

Goldsboro Mayor Al King was on hand when the picnic table was delivered to Herman Park last week, along with Wilson Mewborn, adviser to the school's Technology Students Association.

The team travels to Nashville, Tenn., in June for the national competition.
