Two hurt in wreck
A driver and his passenger were ejected Monday night from their sport utility vehicle after it overturned off Old Smithfield Road, a Goldsboro police report said.
The driver, Ray Shields Brogden, 21, of Ridgefield Drive, Dudley, was listed today in stable condition at Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. The passenger, Drew Brown, 23, of Wilmington, was treated and released.
Brogden was going west near Stevens Mill Road at about 8:40 p.m., when the SUV ran off the left side, struck the ditch and overturned. Police could not determine if Brogden and Brown were wearing seat belts, the report said.
Brogden's 10-year-old SUV, valued at $8,000, was demolished. No charges were filed.
In other collisions:
*A man lost control of his motorcycle at 4:50 p.m. Monday at East Beech Street and North Madison Avenue, toppled from it and was injured, police said. Benjamin Edwards Jr., 63, of East Walnut Street was released after emergency-room treatment. Police said Edwards did not stop at the stop sign, saw a van making a left turn in front of him and then lost control of the motorcycle. No charges were filed. Damage was put at $300.
*Damages were estimated at $7,000 in a two-vehicle collision at 1:40 p.m. Monday on West Grantham Street at the new U.S. 117 bypass bridge, police said. Joseph Robert Best, 19, of U.S. 13 North, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end collision. Cedric Durham, 37, of Stafford, Va., was charged with not having an operator's license.
*An eastbound driver from Dudley was injured in a two-vehicle crash at 7:45 a.m. Friday at Indian Springs and Arrington Bridge roads, the Highway Patrol said. Tynia Michelle Berry, 30, of Dell Drive was released after emergency-room treatment. A northbound driver, Eva Paulette Oliver, 52, of Arrington Bridge Road, Seven Springs, was charged with a safe-movement violation. Damages were set at $4,000.
*A motorist was injured and her car was demolished in a wreck at 10:10 p.m. May 4 on Beston Road near U.S. 70, the Highway Patrol said. Peggy Gore Ivey, 52, of Sutton Road, LaGrange, was released after emergency-room treatment. The car that she was driving ran off the right side, came back across the road out of control, went off the left side and overturned in a field. No charges were filed. The car was valued at $9,500.
*A car was totaled in a wreck at 11:50 p.m. May 4 on Daw Pate Road near Stoney Creek Church Road, the Highway Patrol said. The driver, Amber Blaire West, 23, of Turner Swamp Road, Fremont, was charged with suspicion of driving while impaired. The car that she was driving ran off the right side, came back across the road out of control, went off the left side, struck the ditch and overturned in a field. The car was valued at $10,000.
*A driver from Dudley was injured in a two-vehicle collision at 10:41 a.m. May 3 on Genoa Road near Old Mount Olive Road, the Highway Patrol said. Tabitha Lavonia McCoy, 24, of Beaver Drive was treated, admitted and later released from Wayne Memorial Hospital. The other motorist, William Samuel Earl Cox Jr., 46, of Forest Knolls Road, a garbage truck driver for Wooten Garbage Collection Service of Goldsboro, was charged with driving while impaired. He was starting a right turn from the left lane and the truck collided with Ms. McCoy's car. Damages were fixed at $1,650.
18 tires slashed
A total of 18 tires on 12 vehicles were flattened between Monday night and dawn today at Deacon Jones Ford-Lincoln-Mercury at 1014 11th St., police said. The damage amount was not known.
The auto dealership is offering a $25,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspects. Confidential informants may call Goldsboro-Wayne County Crime Stoppers at 735-2255.
Several other vehicles also were scratched last week, according to reports.
Wayne County law-enforcement officers also are investigating these reports:
*A Honda pressure washer and a vacuum pump were stolen between Friday and Monday from a fenced area at JR's Auto Parts at 724 Marshall St., police said. The stolen property was valued at $4,350.
*Thieves inflicted an estimated $2,950 in damages and stole a swimming pool pump, a pump liner and three ceiling fans from a home in the 100 block of Ava Drive, sheriff's deputies said. Walls, the ceiling, vinyl flooring, light fixtures, a toilet, a door and an air-conditioner were damaged. The owner, S.E. Barefoot, estimated the value of the stolen property at $2,195.
*A red Kohler 18-horsepower push mower with a 60-inch cut was stolen between Saturday and Monday from the owner's yard in the 2300 block of Big Daddy's Road, deputies said. The owner, William Brian Taylor, put a $7,000 value on the mower.
Car fire
A fire on Monday damaged a car at 407 N. Kornegay St., according to a Goldsboro police report.
Firefighters found the engine compartment damaged, put out the fire and then called police to investigate the fire further. Damage was estimated at $1,500 to the 1985 Pontiac, owned by the resident, D.E. Raymer.
Sex charge
A 30-year-old man has been arrested by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and charged with a felony first-degree statutory sexual offense.
Timothy Dan Hyde of Quinn Drive, Mount Olive, was arrested after Detective Sgt. Tammy Odom investigated a report of a possible sexual assault on a 14-year-old girl. Hyde was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $75,000 secured bond.
Break-ins
The Wayne County Sheriff's Office has cleared a residential break-in and theft of coins from a jar with the arrest of 32-year-old man.
Gregory Ricardo Artis of N.C. 222 East, Stantonsburg, was charged with breaking and entering, larceny and possession of stolen goods. He was accused of breaking into a home on Dotsie Drive near Eureka on March 25, Detective Sgt. Carl Lancaster said. Artis was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $40,000 secured bond.
