Downtown Jam

The year's first Center Street Jam will be Thursday from 5:30 to 8 p.m. and will feature the Fantastic Shakers.

The Downtown Goldsboro Development Corporation is inviting everyone to come and enjoy the sounds of great beach music sponsored by RBC Centura.

People are invited to bring their kids, their lawn chairs and their dancing feet. You might also want to come with an appetite, because food from various restaurants and vendors will be available.

The Jam will be held in the parking lot of the Waynesborough House on South Center Street.

Officer memorial

The public is invited Wednesday to remember Wayne County law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty.

The annual memorial service will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday at the Wayne County Emergency Services Memorial on the campus of Wayne Community College in Goldsboro. The service will include the families of the nine law enforcement officers whose names are etched on the monument, current officers and local officials.

The memorial is next to the campus' northern driveway off Wayne Memorial Drive.

Spill at G.E. plant

Investigators doing a safety audit Thursday at the G.E. Lighting's Carolina Products plant in Goldsboro found a broken sewer line.

The broken line caused 12,000-gallon spill of untreated water over three to four weeks into the little River, which is about two miles south of the plant. Workers stopped the leak as soon as it was discovered, and company officials say there was no danger to the community. They said the plant's environment, health and safety team took pH readings and found they were within an acceptable range.

Company officials notified the Division of Water quality the following day. The plant at 900 N. George St. manufactures wire products used in the manufacture of light bulbs.
