Eight students have been invited to participate in the 2004 Governor's School Summer Program.
Attending from Charles B. Aycock are Jennifer A. Jackson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Jackson, Fremont, and Anem Waheed, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Waheed Akhtar.
Participants from Eastern Wayne High School are Katherine Edwards, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Timothy Edwards, Goldsboro, and Laura M. Ivey, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Ivey, Goldsboro.
Rosewood High School students selected are Alex S. Benton, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Benton, Goldsboro.
Students from Southern Wayne High School are Tamara Gibbs, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harris Gibbs, Dudley; Scarlette L. Joyner, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ricky Joyner, Mount Olive, and Emily B. Roseman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Roseman, Goldsboro.
The oldest residential program for academically or intellectually gifted high school students in the nation is open to rising seniors only, with exceptions made for rising juniors in the performing and visual arts areas.
There are two campus locations, Governor's School West at Salem College in Winston-Salem and Governor's School East at Meredith College in Raleigh. Funded annually by the General Assembly, the program is administered by the state Department of Public Instruction.
Student participants are challenged to explore new and significant ideas during their stay.

MOUNT OLIVE -- Daniel Pettus of Princeton received the 2004 Citation for Outstanding Student of the Year in Religion at Mount Olive College's Annual Awards Day held in Rodgers Chapel.
The citation recognizes a student who has excelled academically and who has demonstrated outstanding service to the religion department. The student is named by faculty in the religion department.
Pettus, a senior religion major, is the son of George and Lisa Pettus. He is a graduate of Rosewood High School and is married to Melissa Pettus.

MOUNT OLIVE -- Pamela Braswell of Princeton was recognized as being a member of Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.
Who's Who Awards are certificates given to students selected by the Faculty Awards Committee from faculty nominations for academic achievement, leadership, and community service. Students are listed in Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.
Miss Braswell, a senior education major at Mount Olive College, is the daughter of Kenneth Braswell and Debbie Marshburn. She is a graduate of Rosewood High School.

KENANSVILLE -- The nine graduates of the Basic Law Enforcement Training program at James Sprunt Community College posted a 100 percent passing rate on the state's law enforcement examination.
The graduates of the eight-month certificate program and their families celebrated their accomplishment recently at a commencement ceremony.
The nine completing the course were Elbert L. Baker, Jonathan D. Griffin, Anthony J. James, Michael D. Lee, Joseph V. Milligan, Mark E. Murphy, Amanda B. Nix, Salah "Ali" O'Neil, Robert Spaulding, Daniel Stone, Roy "Lee" Taylor and James E. Tyson.
The BLET program is designed to give students essential skills required for entry-level employment as law enforcement officers with state, county or municipal governments or with private enterprise.
