Transportation plan sets 2005 date for city bike paths

Goldsboro's long-awaited bike bath should be completed by the beginning of next year, say transportation officials.
The Transportation Advisory Committee updated its plan for transportation projects Thursday. The plan includes completion of the bike path and continuing several on-going projects. The program allocates federal and state dollars to local road projects.
The committee's territory covers the Goldsboro Metropolitan Area, which includes the city and areas north and east to the county line. The committee is composed of Goldsboro and Wayne County officials and representatives from Walnut Creek and the state Transportation Department.
The approved Planning Work Program totals $475,810 and includes projects ranging from traffic studies to mapping to parking inventories in downtown Goldsboro.
Last year the program's projected budget was $582,100, but only $307,000 was spent. City Planner Darryl Best said money left by the end of the fiscal year would roll over to the next year.
Money was also allotted to look at route changes for the Gateway bus system and to complete the bike path in the city.
Goldsboro received a federal grant of $342,000 for the project last year. Best said there were still some details to be worked out.
The Goldsboro bike path would begin at the intersection of Berkeley Boulevard and Parkway Drive and follow Parkway Drive to North Park Drive, then north on South Harding Drive to New Hope Road, then west on New Hope to Hare Road.
"It should be completed at the beginning of 2005," Best said. "We're sending out requests for proposals for design and plans."
Best said he expected to submit those proposals to the committee at its next meeting.
