Man killed in shooting at neighbor's house

FREMONT -- A Fremont man was shot to death today in a neighbor's home.
The victim was identified as Nicholas Lonte "Red" Jones, 25, of 309 W. Branch St. The shooting was reported at about 7 a.m. at 310 S. Pender St.
No one has been charged in the shooting, but a man who lived in the Pender Street home was taken to the Wayne County Sheriff's Office for questioning.
"All we can say right now is that we've had a shooting," Sheriff Carey Winders said, "and it is being investigated."
Winders said he did not know if Jones had entered the home illegally or was an invited guest.
"We don't know if they had an argument or what really happened," the sheriff said at mid-morning.
Winders also did not know how many people were in the home or if more than one person would be charged.
Fremont police had answered a 911 call about a shooting, then went to the home and requested assistance in the investigation.
Winders said his detectives were assisting Fremont Chief Ben Reid in the crime scene investigation and the interviewing of witnesses.
The shooting took place in a small white wood-frame home on the northeast corner of Branch and Pender streets.
D-shift sheriff's deputies blocked both streets to keep neighbors and curious onlookers away from the home. Yellow evidence tape was put up around the home.
Jones had a lengthy criminal history of drugs, weapons and traffic convictions since he turned 16 years old, according to records in the Wayne County Courthouse.
Jones had been sentenced to 30 to 45 months for assault with a deadly weapon while inflicting a serious injury and possession of stolen goods; 15 to 18 months for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon; six to eight months for possession of cocaine, and eight to 10 months for possession of stolen goods.
