Driver charged
in school bus wreck
The driver of a car that collided with a school bus on Tuesday at Slocumb and East Walnut streets has been charged with a safe-movement violation and driving while his license was revoked.
The driver, Nakia B. Bryant, 29, of South Slocumb Street, was going south at 7:56 a.m. when the car collided with an eastbound school bus.
Bryant; the bus driver, Rozita Jones Forte, 37, of Beulah Drive, Pikeville, and a woman at a day care on the corner who was hit by flying debris, Mary Jacquiline Cherry, 47, of Maple Street, were injured in the crash. All three were taken to the emergency room at Wayne Memorial Hospital, treated and released.
Six Goldsboro High School student passengers also were treated for minor injuries and released from the hospital. They were identified as Keiosha Bell, 14, of East Elm Street; Laniyah Artis, 18, of West Elm Street; Steven Gamble, 17, of East Walnut Street; Joseph Fuller, 14, of West Spruce Street; Sakena Mayo, 14, of East Pine Street, and Jessica Lofton, 15, of East Pine Street.
Police Officer J.C. Walker said Bryant did not stop for the red light.
Walker said the impact of the collision pushed the bus into a power pole and a tree on the southeast corner and sent the car careening across the intersection into the porch at the day care.
Another worker at the day care, Marian Lance, told WRAL-TV: "When I turned around, I could see the bus when it hit the tree. The car kept coming this way, so I jumped out of the way to keep the car from hitting me, and it the steps. I thank the Lord today that I am alive, because I could have been dead today."
Damage was estimated at $12,000 to the 1997 International school bus and $1,000 to the 1993 Chevrolet that Bryant was driving. The car was registered to Lavonda Renee Kenon of Charles Street.
Damage was set at $5,000 to the Here We Grow Day Care building and $800 to the Progress Energy power pole.
34 marijuana plants
seized; man charged
The Goldsboro-Wayne County Drug Squad on Tuesday seized 34 marijuana plants in the 100 block of Mills Loop Road in Grantham and arrested the resident.
William Scott Grady, 35, was charged with manufacturing marijuana. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $1,500 secured bond.
The plants had an estimated value of $81,600 at maturity, officers said.
2 men wounded
Two men were wounded Tuesday night by gunshots in the 1000 block of Lincoln Drive, Goldsboro police said.
The driver, Jermaine Maurice Thompson, 21, of Head Street, and his passenger, James DeAngelo Ray, 16, of North Jefferson Avenue, were treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital. They could not describe their assailants.
Damage to the car, registered by Roger Eugene Thompson of Audubon Avenue, was estimated at $200.
Building burns
A fire at a storage building at 401 Park Ave. on Tuesday night caused an estimated $150 in damages, a Goldsboro police report said.
The Fire Department responded to a 10:30 p.m. call with three engines, a ladder and a command car and put out a small fire. Assistant Fire Chief Gary Whaley said cause of the fire was suspicious and referred it to police for a further investigation.
The property was owned by the resident, Faye M. Cherry, the report said.
Collisions
Damages were estimated at $29,000 in three recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, the Highway Patrol reported.
*A sport utility vehicle was demolished, a house was damaged and the driver was charged in a wreck at 12:20 a.m. Saturday on Casey Mill Road near Arrington Bridge Road, the Highway Patrol said. Kris Bernard Dean, 43, of Emmaus Church Road, Dudley, was charged with driving while impaired and reckless driving. His SUV ran off the left side, came back across the road, ran off the right side, struck mail boxes and ran into a home at 512 Casey Mill Road. The SUV was valued at $5,000; damage was set at $10,000 to the Pauline Wiggins home.
*Damages were estimated at $7,000 in a two-vehicle collision at 8:03 a.m. Friday at Pecan and Pinehill roads, the Highway Patrol said. One driver, Gabelle Denise Perkins, 24, of Brook Meadow Drive, LaGrange, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end collision with a car operated by Jose Luis Velasquez Velasquez, 25, of Pinehill Road, Dudley.
*Damages were put at $7,000 in a two-vehicle crash at 9:45 a.m. April 13 at U.S. 13 and Hood Swamp Road, the Highway Patrol said. One driver, Vincent Edward Hall Jr., 18, of Mill Run Place, was going west on Hood Swamp Road, and the other motorist, John Edward Sugg III, 56, of Northwest Third Street, Snow Hill, was going north on U.S. 13. Troopers could not determine if either driver was at fault, and no charges were filed.
Investigations
Wayne County law-enforcement officers are investigating these reports:
*A Goldsboro woman reported that a man smashed a window in her apartment on North Jefferson Avenue early today, chased her outside, then assaulted her and fled, a Goldsboro police report said. The intruder was described as black, about 35 years old, 5-feet-6 and 160 pounds with short black hair and brown eyes. He wore a striped shirt and blue pants.
*About $490, a digital camera and three axes were stolen between Monday and Tuesday from Cheap Junk.com at 110 Centura Drive, deputies said. The thief damaged a video security system and a steel door to get inside. The stolen property, in addition to the cash, was valued at $500, and damage was set at $1,900.
*A white Maytag refrigerator was stolen between Saturday and Tuesday from a mobile home at Goldsboro Homes at 4387 U.S. 70 East, deputies said. The refrigerator was valued at $500.
False pretense
A 23-year-old Dudley man was arrested Tuesday by Goldsboro police and accused of filing a fraudulent Social Security claim.
Jasper Wayne Joyner of Mobile Circle was charged with obtaining property by false pretense, a felony. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $1,000 secured bond.
Joyner was accused of trying to get an extra Social Security check, Investigator Dwayne Dean said. Wayne County Sheriff's Deputy Chuck Schaeffer and Investigator Chad Calloway assisted in the case.
